Star Trek 1:350 Enterprise Build

I don’t know if there are a lot of model builders on this forum, and I won’t take up Bob’s server space with a full blown build thread…But a model has come out I just have to share. The original Enterprise in 1:350 scale! .

. I have lusted after this kit for 35 years and finally someone produced it. I got mine through the “1701 Club”, a group of people who signed up over a year ago to buy one of the first 1,701 kits produced. Well my year wait is finally over. These are special editions with all the parts required to build any of the 3 versions of the “T.V.” Enterprise. Of course I will be throwing all those parts away to build a fully lighted example including “spinning” nacelles. This model will be 32" long when complete! I guess you have to be a special kind of twisted geek to pay so much for a styrene kit…Or in my case, two!

“computer, I want my Enterprise, no bloody A, No bloody B, No bloody C, just plain ole NCC-1701”

well there was my geek reference for the day

Nice kit though, should be fun to build

I built one when I was a kid–likely about the same scale, don’t remember. Lit up, which was very cool at night hanging from my ceiling! It was right after the first movie came out. Post a pic of the finished model, eh?

Later,

K

Ditto, but I wasn’t exactly a kid, though the one I built wasn’t quite as large as this one. Probably half that size.

The old AMT kits where 1:650, very good size at about 18". This one may be a bit “ornery” to display.

I will shoot some video of the finished model showing the lighted/spinning nacelles.

By the way, I do not want to start a “scale” discussion but I always thought is somewhat silly to discuss “scale” of imaginary creations. It’s not like we can measure the original!

Mark, Mark, Mark .... search this very forum for discussions of the never-built Biles Coleman 2-6-6-2, and whether it's possible to make a scale model of such a thing, or indeed, any locomotive that never actually graced the rails with a physical presence. You'll find a boatload of arguments on both sides. Of course, at 1:20, there'd probably be room for most of my collection in the shuttle bay of the Enterprise even without the "D" ...

“Kirk to Enterprise, there is no intelligent life on this planet. Beam us up.”

“It’s life Jim, but not as we know it.”

Nice to see other “Trekkies” showing their enthusiasum.

Star Trekkin’ across the universe,
On the Starship Enterprise under Captain Kirk.
Star Trekkin’ across the universe,
Boldly going forward 'cuz we can’t find the reverse…

You totally mad bugger! You actually bought that monster of a kit? I would need to add an extra room just to display it. For those who may not be aware, this kit is about 3 FEET LONG when completed, its MASSIVE! Now, did you buy the LIGHTING KIT specifically for this model???

(extra nerd points if you can ID whats on the viewscreen)

Nevermind, did read you have the lighting kit  I will be watching this with extreme interest, it may prompt me to begin building my long, really lonnnnng, planned LIS launchpad diorama.

LOL! Yep, nuts!

I did indeed buy the lighting kit, it cost more than the model!!! Well worth it though, very extensive.

I picked up the second kit for a planned bash into a “tug” complete with its container in tow (for those geeky enought to know what that means). I also plan on a 1:350 Botany Bay to display beside the Enterprise.

This is a train forum and I will respect that, but I will post a picture or two along the way.

A Ptolemy Class Tug? I got the Refit in 350 and have pondered the lighting kit fer a while…still wonder where I would put it!

dbl post… nevermind

OK Mark nevermind the Enterpoop, what is that rather largish “EAGLE” kit I spy with my little eye???

Ha!..Didn’t notice that! That is a “Replicas Unlimited” resin kit nearing completion. Measures in at 24". I need to do some painting so I can move on with it but the weather is not cooperating. A difficult but fantastic kit.

The Dr. Who drawing on the wall is the basis for my next stained glass window I am doing for myself. It will be placed in the wall between my game-room and family-room.

The picture I posted is a rare shot of my “Geek Cave” where I do all my train and Sci-Fi modeling. Please respect my secret identity!

Victor, here is a mock-up…And the view screen shows Lt Ellis from UFO! .

Bart, I have the re-fit. If you are looking to light it may I suggest what I am using? Cold Cathode Tubes from Crazy PC. The assembled shot below is before I used the light blocking material seen in the dissassembled pic. And yes, it will be the Ptolemy. .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slYW7kkHyI4 I was very saddened to read of Gerry Andersons passing last month I thought that Eagle looked alot bigger than the old Airfix kit. Hellova kit there! I have a Warp Eagle kit that along with a resin Hawk I am trying to build up the courage to conquer.

Hi Mark and other Trekkies:

Has anyone visited the Smithsonian to view the model built for the original TV Series? Apparently that star ship prop was narrowly saved from ending in the dumpster!

There is only one side to the 1701 model. The film was simply flipped over for the audience view of the non-existent other side. The blue colour of the ship was due to bad film quality. The ship is definitely white.

The rotating nacel lights were simply blinking Christmas lights on a rotating disk.

What I find so great about the original series is the crudeness of the sets but yet with the colours chosen, the sound effects and Captain Kirk’s over acting made it all work.

I really enjoy that comedian who impressonates Captain Kirk and really stresses his over acting.

Years ago Scotty came to our school. He aired the Star Trek short film intended to poke fun at Star Trek. When Captain Kirk called over the intercom for Warp factor 3, the camera shot moved over to a 1960’s boiler room where Scotty was dressed in his Star Trek Uniform and shoveled more coal into the blast furnace to achieve Warp factor 3.

All of the actors were unknowns when they were cast for Star Trek. Scottie and Captain Kirk are Candian. Scottie served during WWII in the Canadian infantry and lost one finger from German machine gun fire.

The original series was best for me. The later series had incredible special effects but there was not the same Captain Kirk, Doctor McCoy and Office Spock triangle.

The actors initially thought that the Trekie conventions would last just one year, maybe two at the most. Then they realised that the Trekie conventions were never going to end.

Of course, Scotty and Doctor McCoy are now no longer with us but they certainly made their mark in history.

Mark, is there a web link describing the large 1701 kit?
I am not going to build one but I really am interested in seeing what the finished product looks like.

There was a British condo apartment interior featured on a British news show. The British apartment interior was finished exactly like the bridge of the Enterprise. That is carrying things a little far but if the tenant enjoys the Enterprise bridge interior what is the harm?

and why not? i know people, who decorate their houses with railroad related objects.... i could think about worse things, than live "on the bridge" of the enterprise - how about living in replicas of the Galactica living quarters?

has anybody of you fellow SF-railroaders found a way to integrate the two hobbies one with the other?
