I agree, the roof vent is a necessity on an engine shed. All the stack gasses have to go somewhere. If they don’t go out through the vent, then they end up filling the inside of the engines shed, killing the locomotive crew, or at the very least, making them very sick.

I would agree if this building was being used as an engine shed. I call it that because that was my best guess for what it was intended when built, but I use it as an industry, It usually has freight cars inside. I haven’t given it a name yet, but it might end up being a car repair shop. Right now it is a fuel depot getting oil tanks and coal hoppers, but that can be changed with a few keystrokes (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)
I will accommodate you guys and give it a closer look this weekend. The problem is that it is pretty far gone - most of the roof shingles are rotten and much of the siding is loose. It may be smarter to remove it now and keep the building looking in good repair than let it Fail over the next year or so.
@Turkey, scuz me, Rooster; please define Enu. If I go with the red (need to go check the painted sample now) I will definitely go with white mullions/sash in the flavor of EBT. I think black will be too dark. This will not be a bright barn red like Wall Station, just a redwood stain over the already dark weathered cedar.
Stain sample test is done. Mikey like. In the pic top to bottom is smooth weathered cedar w/stain, raised grain weathered cedar w/stain, raised weathered cedar without stain, and on the right a pine stir stick. One coat all cases…
I think this will work with white window trim. Sorry Big D.
Now to decide if I should donate a fine needle for my work HLVP sprayer, then borrow it for a weekend or use foam brushes to apply.
Time to throw MY all important ( to me) 2 cents worth. The roof vent gives the building a ton of charactor over a regular building. I would vote for if you take it off build a new one to replace it… all thid from someone who does not have anything built for his RR yet. I like the weathered stained cedar. Great building
Thank you Pete. The general consensus, including the most important one from my wife, is to leave the vent in place. It needs one full length course of cedar which I have in stock and it really does need a new roof, but for now it is just going to get the replacement board then stain. I will stain the roof shingles black, then all of the siding including the vent with the redwood. There is plenty of lichen growing on both the roof shingles and the siding. I am laeaving it all in place while I stain. If the stain kills it and it falls off that will just add some interest to the color scheme.
For the window mullions I went with all white. I wanted matte white, but they had gloss white in the cutter on Friday when I reminded my college of what I wanted cut, so I got gloss. Either my original measurements were just a bit off, or my colleague’s scaling factor was just a tad off. The result was that the long strip of 15 windows that I was going to put down as one piece did not line up with the openings. Cutting them into individual windows and leaving just s small space between them fixed that problem and also made putting the vinyl down easier. Sorry the photos are are out of focus. I think the camera was confused by the two levels of clear acrylic. Here is one wall ready to install once staining is done…
Got the building stained today. I’m really happy with the colors. First I masked off all but the vent roof then applied some Minwax Ebony stain with a throw-away brush. It’s very thin and I loaded it on with no prep - right over dirt and lichen…
Then I removed the mask from the vent sides and replaced missing siding…
Then I applied Olympic Elite #704 Redwood semi-transparent exterior stain / preservative with a brush. I bought 3 7.5oz. sample cans for $5 each. The job took two. The difference in color is outstanding…
Again, I did no cleaning or removal of dirt. I am hoping that some of the stain will weather off quickly because of it. The finished stain job…
Looking at these pictures, the ends cry out to have the horizontal trim run across them. I have the wood so I think that will happen.

If you haven’t applied the gloss white yet or even if you have you can lightly mist it with say flat black or green or something grimy …and when I say lightly I mean lightly. Stand back and mist to tone it down.
Really think you will be happier with the new plan (however that is only my opinion and my suggestions as you asked for them)

Not sure how I would mist the vinyl now without fogging the glazing which I’d rather not do. If I had thought after I weeded before putting on the application tape I could have sprayed the vinyl with matte clear in the shop. I think the gloss will look fine.

Unfortunately the Over Engineering Department miscalculated the length of fasteners needed so I wasn’t able to permanently attach the acrylic. It was crazy cold and windy after 5 anyway, so I was just as happy to take these shots then come inside. I’ll get the last of the vinyl on tonight then buy and paint new fasteners tomorrow. Just lit the gas fireplace in the train room. Brrrrrrr,
