Large Scale Central

Snow forecast

While y’all are bragging about climate and travel , what’s the furthest you’ve travelled to see a railway ?
I claim a fair distance , UK to Vancouver (long walk) , Vancouver to Whitehorse BC , explored that end of WPYR , then went to Skagway to look at and travel on the other end .
It was sunny as the train left Skagway , but as we crossed the Canadian border , we ran into snow . The return trip was done in the cab of the loco .
We got to know the border people quite well , we travelled by road a lot from Whitehorse to Skagway and back or vice versa . Got so pally with Customs , they played a few pranks on us .
My son exceeded that , he went to Hawaii to see the plantation trains on Maui . His wife said it was for a honeymoon , but she’s learning . Poor girl is from Cal-i-for-ni-ay , where people are strange , but have to admit that the Brits are even stranger . Anyway , that’s London to Maui .Long way .
Oh , and I have done snow skiing in the Med----Cyprus in winter gets very deep snow on Mount Olympus .
Local tradition is to pile snow on car roof to see how far down to the central plain you can get before it melts .
The snow , not the plain .
My first trip to Canada was before most of you were born , I went on an Arctic survival course . Passed OK .
Well , I’m still here , ain’t I ?

No Precip here at all, weather map on-line looks to be getting close?

Ralph, you need to date your photos, that one looks like it was taken a few weeks ago…when you got it all and we got none–my kids are driving me nuts-“Wheres the snow?”…gonna tell them:

“It’s Mr. Ralph, you remember…the man who came over and took your Red “Tweetsie” then your Black “American” engine, yeah…he takes all the snow too!”

We are supposed to get anywhere from 5" to 11", so far ain’t nothing coming down yet.

Hey Christopher, welcome to LSC!

When they get a little older I’ll have to teach them how you take all the money

About 5 or 6 inches on the ground here now. Still snowing heavy.

". . . Don’t move to Winnipeg. Manitoba. Winter daytime lows of -40 C are common. Then add the wind chill. "

Bull !! Olde farts tale !

My hometown of Portage la Prairie is only 50 miles west of the 'Peg. And it is not that bad
Left here for xmas holidays and found that manitoba had a third of the snow than here. Temps were not that bad at all during the 3 wks i was home visiting. My sister told me that it was a good thing I was spending a longer than normal trip bk. home in Manitoba instead of here in Cowtown (aka calgary) !!

Actually I would have moved back to Man. after being laid-off in 2000, but mosquitoes/ fear of quaranteed vandalism due to negative personalities within “urban reserves” (read similiar to “the low-income projects” of the u.s.a. / 4-6" of snow all winter after the annual big dump, so not at all conducive to GR hobby. Unless a person had a two-storey large bldg one lvel for lvg space and second for a indoor layout ! This keeps me here although this yr overall winter here has been really not better than central Canada aka Manitoba.

Also Minn. along with the Dakotas (south of Manitoba) were getting their ass’ kicked over the holidays the IS down into N.D. was actually closed for a couple days Up in Man. we were moving round like it was still fall or late spring ! Even the fools without winter tires on.

The first time lucky to take in a ECLSTS’01, the first couple days of the trip were great seeing PA by staying off the Interstates and subsequently driving the old hwys Harrisburg—Gettysburg—Altoona—Strasburg—York(show) —Harrisburg 10 days
By the 4th day I was thinking this is very narssistic (sp?) according the weather maps on the supper newscasts and via the weatherchannel the world ends at the border of the continental u.s. If the chinese had not jumped an alleged u.s. spy ship at the time, there would have been no news nor weather outside the borders ! Even then it was of the ocean 'roudn where the ship was being held. When ya travel to the u.s.a. you go dark regards world current affairs excluding maybe now with bodycounts in iran or afghan’n although that may not cont as it is u.s. only !! Soooo by 7th day I decided u.s.a. a fine place to visit for maybe 10 days but beyond that like being a tibetan monk on a mtn. And he would know more about Canada and the rest of the world, from what is “blowing in on the wind”.

Here only a lite skiff of snow perfect for a snowplow special, alas i did not walk the r/w last wk before it again went below 0c during the day otherwise i would have seen 3 remaining patches of snow that melted and now refroze. Stuff i don’t dare touch for fear of breaking trackage. Mid-december majority of RBR r/w was under like 20’ of snowpack (1:29) till the big melt arrived 2 wks ago !

doug c

a proud PlaPian ! also where the CN/cp mainlines cross over at grade, similiar sit’ as rochelle, ill. but shamefully not developed in PlaP for the railfan ! oh, oh a cold front has moved south again for a week, must be that texan front moving easterly that is sucking down the cold front . . . .

They (claim) that Nashville will get 6-10 inches, I have never seen 4" in the past 15 years, so wait and see. Operations on the NStLB/NMD have been suspended regardless:

Well, the furthest I’ve traveled to see a railroad is from Sandy Eggo, CA to Mombasa, Kenya. That is a bit of a distance, too.

Up this am with maybe an inch or two…not sure how the day will progress----

correction…after further review 1/2" Max…sleet falling now

Yes, Steve, a long way -----but mostly downhill on the map .

Mike

ps snow last night didn’t last , it got frosty instead . Which reminds me , I got a funny snag on my Jeep ;
if it’s cold , the whole heating system won’t start .

We have about 8 inches of snow. Quite a bit less than the forecast called for. I’m not complaining.
They say another 1-3 inches possible today. Snow is iced over this morning. So it must have turned to
rain sometime during the night.

It sounds like areas by the VA NC border will do well with snow. Ralph what town are you by in NC?

Shawn,
I’m between Asheville, NC. and Spartanburg, SC.
Just outside of Lake Lure, NC.

all the “predicted” moisture didn’t show up here…Wonder if RJ got it all?

Locals Hammering on the weather people on the Fox21 Weather blog, for hyping the storm, even as moisture went “away”…
