When it comes to military I spent just enough time - seventeen weeks of basic training - to confirm that it is an utter waste of time and resources. OTOH it is an excellent playground for those who didn’t get their fill of “cowboys and indians”, “medieval knights” and whatever else we used to play as kids. Some “kids” just never get enough of “war games” :wink: :slight_smile: .

Folks with that attitude usually did go at least twice as long! Some can handle it, some can’t, no dishonor there. Some just won’t…and are content to let others protect their behinds.

No, seventeen weeks was the duration of basic training in 1965. Lots of fun. :wink: :smiley: e.g. the religous indoctrination session.

Naturally with Protestant and Catholic being the two dominant believes at the time (in Switzerland, that is :wink: ) we got the benefit of a Catholic chaplain giving us the low down on “matters”.
It just so happened that four of us ten attended Separate Highschool, three more were doing their apprenticeship at the same company as I.
So the ten went to the session(s), in order to show some results, the army planned three sessions of two hours each. We actually could have just sat there and let it pour over us. But as Tony W likes to remind us, there are the hypocrites and then there are other people.

So we started asking the chaplain the relevant and pertinent questions and for each answer there was a follow-up question. Just like a press scrum, except at that time I had no idea what that would be. The poor chaplain tried to twist and turn his way out of all the inconsistencies and contradictions.
At the end of the session he told us not to come back, he had enough (his words, no kidding!).
Of course he was only doing what he was told to do, following orders.

Of course we “cheated” ourselves out of four more hours of slacker time. :smiley: :smiley: Really “dumb move”, isn’t it?
Well, not really, there is something to be said for being true to oneself and not “gobbling down the horsemanure” when it’s served up! :wink: :slight_smile: :wink:

PS This thread should be retitled “the benefits of the Swiss and other armies”. :smiley: :smiley: :smiley:

Ah, but did they teach you the really IMPORTANT stuff in those 17 weeks like how to field-strip a .45ACP and actually take out a bad guy with it?

They sure did! Mountain infantry is a very interesting branch and being in the bazooka platoon was very “educational”, we even got some sniper training, that is those of us who were good shots.
But instead of a.45ACP we got to amuse ourselves with the SIG AR57; very handy piece of hardware for its time!

HJ, The difference is that my side has no interest in enslaving the other side. The same can't be said of our current and recent enemies.

I would venture to suggest that bringing, say, McDonalds and other unhealthy fast food chains into “enemy” territory as the result of imposing Democracy to a “conquered” nation, is a form of enslavement.

I don’t know of any country that deserves that being done to them.

Until recently there were certain schools here in Australia that had signed agreements with Maccas that only Maccas was to be sold at the school fundraising fetes.
No other options.
I don’t think that is much freedom of choice. Eat Maccas or starve.

Fortunately wise parents kicked up so much of a stink the practice was stopped.

There has never been peace as far back as mankind can remember, because there were always nutbars who could convince some other nutbars to not only do their bidding but also do the fighting for them. A Canadian wrote a song about it called “Universal Soldier”. (Buffy St. Marie)

HJ, yes, they did publish such a book. It is called the Qu’uran (Koran to the Rubes). In that book they demand of their faithful just that, world domination. Where Christians convert by force of argument, Islam converts at the point of a sword. All of what is now thought of as hereditary Islamic land was once either Jewish, or Christian, or Hindu, or other. In the Balkans, the Bosnians and the Serbs are the same racial stock of people, from the same original “tribe.” What separates them is their religion, one is Christian and one is Muslim. The ones who are Muslim, their ancestors were converted at the point of the sword. “Infidel, either convert or die.” There is no such thing as a moderate Muslim. The reason that the “moderate” Muslims have not spoken out is because they all agree with the radicals.

About this “Universal Soldier” crap. Buffy got it wrong. It is not the soldier who causes war, it is the politician. The soldier hates war. The soldier has seen war and all of its devastation and hates it. Still, the soldier is willing to put his life on the line for Kin and Country, even the ones who want to be counted out.

You can count yourself out, put your head in the sand and play with your trains. But it is that attitude that the enemy counts on. Canada used to be a great nation. 60 years ago it was. Now it is little more than a third world nation. What happened?
