Bob, The "old" forum is the best designed forum I have ever visited. In terms of both aesthetics and function. The only thing I don't like about the "old", is the chat. I know this isn't much help ;) Ralph
Me, too. There are some things I like about the new site, but change is not necessary, this place is very user friendly, as well as being very friendly.

For any who might wonder, HJ and I have enormous respect for each other, we just disagree… a lot. And we enjoy disagreeing.

From a user standpoint, maybe you don't see change necessary, but from an administration standpoint, its neigh on impossible to keep up with the flood of fake users and spam, not to mention that browsers evolve and change, which requires software patches or upgrades. The software that runs the site currently is nearing the end of its useful "I can fix this" life. Not upgrading is not an option. My issue is making any new site behave as close as I can to what it is now.

I understand the "engine" needs replaced. I didn't intend to imply no change was needed. As close as you can get it to what it is now would be great. From a "user" standpoint, you really have a great site. Far better than any other forum I've seen, train or otherwise. Ralph

Ain’t that the truth. What a boring world it would be if everyone agrees with everyone else just so the boat doesn’t get rocked.

Steve why not visit HJ's forum and then we can see some tail feathers fly. :) ;)
Now, now.

Our RhB/Swiss Trains Forum is a very civilized place. In order to sign up you send an email to yours truly to get a registration form. Then yours truly decides on the basis of what you entered in the registration form and if I smell a rat I’ll do a bit of digging. OTOH if someone gets recommended by a current member it’s clear sailing, no sweat.

Just like Bob mentions, the spammers and the potential fake users used to be a regular PITA, even though they could not post until I would clear them. The “clever” people would always add enough crap in the user information. That sure gets boring real quick.
Oh another feature on our forum, if you get cleared but don’t contribute you get yanked, parsing happens once a year.

Looks like a nice engine behind it. I run several yacht club sites, and I know how “fun” it can be. Is it an established CMS (I use Drupal) or something you rolled yourself?

As for chat, I had some good success with PHPfreechat, though I finally just wrote my own to keep it simpler.

Thanks for this!

I like the thread starter name in the thread list for each forum. That seems to be missing in the new version.

I like it Bob. Then yet Im easy going. I always adapt and go with the flow. Then yet Im young

That's changin........every year. Just ask Rooster :D Ralph

Worked through a lot of the styling issues, getting closer to what I’m going to end up with. Still not 100%, but getting there.

Next up is addressing things like mark-all-as-read, and making the “there are new messages here” icons a bit more, well, noticeable.

Then importing the photo gallery.

Work work work work…

Is it done yet?

I think Rooster has two function keys programmed…

One sends

The other sends Is it done yet?

I wonder who programmed them for him ???

I don’t know…but they should hang with Rooster from Terry’s bridge
Ralph

This thread has been quiet, but I’ve been working hard on it. Only a few features to add:

Photo Galleries need to be imported.
Pasting URL directly into forum post to generate an inline image
Freight shed integration (My Files link)
Sound notifications in Chat.

Once those are done, I’ll choose a day to move over to the new format. I’m anticipating late Sept for the switchover.
