Shay No7 Gets a Facelift

Sooooo Most of y’all know Shay No7…

She’s responsible for my first and only Contest Award at the 2001 Convention in Cincy. Started life as a Bmann Shay and got upgraded to 7/8 scale…now she’s shrinking again, but is coming off more like a Standard Gauge Shay thats been converted to 3ft… Yesterday I used a styrene No Parking sign to build new cab, bunker, and tank structures, and removed assorted items that were obviously 7/8 scale. Skin begins today…

The project has started…Great…nice to see you up and motivated…YOU DO GREAT WORK, Barty…keep at it; it tends to motivate others to start projects too.

Nothing like a Deadline to get yer rear in gear…

Ok…got roped into running around with the Women Folk this morning…got a freelunch out of it at least, but didn;t get in to The Shop til after Noon… Did get the tank almost ready fer priming. Just need to add a few more details…

Lookin’ good there Bart!

Question: Does the top of the tank open up for access to the electronics, or does the whole tank lift off?

Right now BOTH! But I will be secureing the tank tothe tender frame and some of the electronic components to the walls of the tank. So the plan is for the tank lid to lift off for swapping out batteries. Yes I know I’m not supposed to put batteries in there…but its worked for 7 years…

Looking pretty slick, Bart.

BTW, TANSTAAFL!

Why not? Seems like a logical place for 'em.

On some of the less powerful RC systems will suffer from interferance from being too close to batteries and the like, TOC or Tony can prolly explain it better. But since I use a Big Ol Honkin 2 stick transmitter, its not an issue, unless the neighbor has got his Amatuer Radio rig fired up…

The wrapper is applied to the Cab, now to make it purtyfied and add the details so I can roll it into the paintshop. Yesterday I actually found something I needed at Radio Shack, some flashlight bulbs to use in the new headlamps. Armed with that bit o technology, I was able to finish up the tender tank and get it primered.

'splain whatcha got at Radio Shack!

She’s lookin’ good.

Some Midget 12v flashlight bulbs, since I run No7 on 9.6v they work out just fine…

Finally worked out all the Electrical problems and am getting that rats nest of wires a bit more organized, thanks to Tony Walsham of RCS for bailing me out of a spot here I lost the original schematics…The tank is painted and awaiting stenciling, tonight I plan to finish up the front headlight install and get the cab detailed up…then primer and paint for it. Still need to knock out a new air compressor and rebuild the reservoir over the weekend…then were ready to go afield!

Purdy! Kewl!

I sit in awe of you! I am amazed by those of you who have the skill and talent to do that kind of work.

My hamhanded attempts… well, there is a reason that I do not enter any contests.

Looking good Bart.

Funny how things do a 360 over time, ain’t it.

Have Fun: Jeff

Hey Jeff!!! Where ya been? So last night I finalized the the componet setup and neatedup the tangle o wires…the paint was completed and the tender tank looked like this…

Benchtesting gets me 2 hours runtime with 1000ma 9.6v batteries, little better than previously expereinced, but I’ll take it. This morning I’m working on the Front headlight, Air reservoir, and cab details…

Pushin’ on today…Cab detailed and painted, smokebox graphited, rebuilt air reservoir (which was painted after the photo was taken…

Fabricated cab steps too, generator and mounting is fixed up and just needs to be mounted and plumbing installed…air compressor was begun…Nothin’ like a deadine…
