Set Out Cabins

I was inspired by other guys here who have built set out cabins for their work crews so I have been wanting to build my own for a time now. This Fall I had ripped all the wood to build 4 of these and then they went on the back burner. With this years build challenge I had lots of time waiting for glue to dry so I banged these cabins out.

They came out a bit big at 6x8 at the roof line but they still fit on flat cars for moving to the job site. I tried a new technique for me that a few were doing in the build challenge and that was using black ink and alcohol to give the wood an aged look. I was also inspired to give the windows actual panes where in the past I would have used a piece of plexi and painted the panes on .

Good job. Your lumberjacks will be happy!

Nice build Tod,

Point of possible interest, in the Western logging woods they were known as “skid shacks”

and were mounted on timber beams (skids) so they could be moved around the camp setup

by donkey engines with cables. Also they could be loaded on rail flats by cross hauling with the donkey

or using a crane.

Skid shacks are a good name for them. I did put skids underneath. You can just see them in the photo.

Mighty fine shacks there, Todd. I need to build some of those my self but several other projects ahead of them for now.

Put some smoke stacks on them so they look like they have stoves in them!

I made 3 or 4 of them a bunch of years back out of blue foam and PP veneers. Problem was they were too light and got blown all over the place. Got 1 left that I use as a pump house for the water tank.

Todd,

Nice job. Something I’ve been meaning to build for my RR some day.

Really nice. I want to build a half-dozen coal patch houses for the complex at Majestic.

I have been trying to finalize the design for my coal mine company houses, but I just cant seam to get it right. Maybe I should just copy those nice shacks and call it quits.

One other opportunity to look at is the Miners cabin offered by Banta Modelworks http://www.bantamodelworks.com/

Nice work Todd. I did the same for mine, although my guys are spoiled I gave them wood stoves (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I like 'em a lot Todd. They look real. I need to make some of those if I go ahead with a mining scene. How is the rent?!

Did you purchase that buried cable flag and if so where did you purchase it from?

Nice job!

I used to work for the phone company and did the Underground Utility Locates. Why would I buy them?

I have seen them at Lowes, along with the Proposed, water, power, sewer, and gas flags.

But, since I know you and somewhat like you, I would be happy to provide you with a few…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

HA! or should I say mmmwhhaaahaaa (pronounce like a evil landlord as you twist the end of your moustache)

Actually the the cabins will only be occupied in the warmer months of the year and I got thinking that when these things are moved by train how would the stove etc… handle the pushing, pulling and hoisting? The stoves if present must have been bolted to the floor.

The roofs on these are actually an experiment. I took one of our old scratched up aluminum real estate signs and cut it up to fit the shacks. The “tar paper” roofing is actually just black duct tape that is sure to peel off someday soon.

Still I don’t want to be called Ebenezer so stoves and pipes will be going in before these cabins are brought to the Spring job site.
