Sea Land Piggy Back Build

Towed some of the Sea Land containers on their trailers during my tour in Vietnam. Thought it would be fun to have one on a flatcar, just for grins.

I found a trailer on ebay(that guy that sells lots of parts/etc) Made a hollow wood container and covered it with aluminum printing plate I scored lines and rivets in, used duct tape foil for the corners/edges. Old Delton flat car I got cheap off Andre at Marty’s I O.D’d. Got the decals designed, will get them printed off soon.

Jerry, the trailer came out great…

Jerry saw some of them containerrs at Vung Tau when we landed on our way through - the memories.

That trailer has finished up really great and with the decals it will be really good.

…grinning…

awsome. Nice work on the trailer rivets.

Geez, ya cheated…where’s the reefer unit at???..

Nice build Jerry

Thanks guys. Ken, that reefer was in one of my convoys from Qui Nhon to Pleiku. I took that pix before kicking out. Usually had meat. Us TC guys had LOTS of steak to eat, seems a container would break open sometimes!

Jerry, can you post a link to the ebay guy?
Thanks,
Ron

So that’s where all the steak went…left us tank drivers with the hamburger…

I’m sure no graffitti ever got on the sides of those trailers. Looks good, hope it stays that way.

That LarryGScale guy on ebay has the trailers, in the G scale train section. One there now.:

About done with the Sea Land build. I designed the lettering on my computer and printed it off on ink jet vinyl. Then just peel off the backing and stick it on. On the flatcar lettering I put an o.d. background around the white lettering. I weathered the old Delton flatcar with acrylic dry brush and then used Bragdon chalks on it and the trailer. Now I need to shoot it with a U.V. spray. The vinyl holds up well to sun if you use it.

It came out great, Jerry…

Nice Jerry.
The weathering looks excellent !

That looks very nice, Jerry. What is aluminum printing plate and where do you get it? Looks like that stuff might be useful for roofing.

as usual… your models are excellent!

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments.

Bruce, I got some aluminum printing plates from a small town newspaper. Local papers that still do their own printing use them. Thin enough to emboss, but thick enough to cover the base structure. The metal duct tape I use works fine, but imperfections underneath can show through. I used 3M spray adhesive for attaching the plates. I use it in the tubes for smaller jobs. I think they were only a buck apiece.

Awesome. The scratches in it add to the look, very nice!

Where do you get your vinyl sheet to print onto?

Do you know how thick that aluminum is? I see that Hobbylinc has some stuff that’s .016". And thicker as well. Just never thought about modeling with it.
