Large Scale Central

SD60f Build

Fine, I hope everyone’s happy. It has glass. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)I also completed the side ladders, frame stripes, and hand rails.

What’s left? Wipers, MU hoses, brake chain, and the round windows on the tail section.

Mike, you get credit on this thread as I got it from you.

Shane

Most excellent!!!

But it needs to be just a little dirty

Richard

Most excellent Shane. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Well Dave, and Richard, I’m glad you’re liking it.

Yes Richard, it does need a little weathering.

The glass was to make your crews happy, not to make me happy.

No, actually it was to make me happy. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)I need to get this thing finished. My crews just hint at what I should tackle next.

great looking model!!!

congratulations

Shane, thanks for sharing your detailed build logs. I used to think Diesels were plain looking, until you made all the components.

Wonderful!

John S., thanks. Hopefully eventually it will be hauling a nicely weathered train like you feature in your videos. Your weathering is fantastic. Keep the videos coming. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

John C., no problem. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying the ride. A kind individual that asked to remain nameless set up an article of the build for me. I’ll post the link here when it’s complete. I’m not sure if I should show you Guys the building of the side ladders. I made them out of brass, and that’s an area I have no experience in. They were not pretty when I was done. Luckily the black paint hides a lot. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Shane

It’s a crime if this build isn’t published in a book or magazine. Maybe I’m living in the past, Shane, but nothing with an http://www. in front of it is good enough by itself.

Now there’s nothing I wouldn’t weather, but, with all due respect to other opinions, I don’t think you should touch this work with a ten-foot weathering pole.

I agree with the other Johns S, C, and P said. Exceptvthe part about weathering, no, no and no. It looks great as is!

I like them factory fresh too… enjoy the brilliance of the colors.

Greg

this one is for keeping it clean and under glass on the mantlepiece… would be my decision, if it were mine.

A little light weathering–brings the detail out. A light dusting on the underside highlights the details lost in shadow, and a little dirt and grime along the body emphasizes the panelwork and doors. I’d suggest using a wash for the body. Brush it on and let it settle into the cracks and corners. Wipe it (mostly) off before it dries, and you retain the glossy sheen of the paint, leaving the dull wash just in those cracks and corners. On the trucks, I’d use powders primarily, though I’d be tempted to start with a grimy brown/black wash, then dust it with the powders. That’s the approach I took on my EBT M-8 project. Well-maintained, but not stuffed-and-mounted.

Oh, and fantastic job! I’ve enjoyed following this along.

Later,

K

Wow Guys, thanks for all the feedback.

Don’t worry, I won’t get carried away. Kevin nailed what I’m after. (great photo and model Kevin) I want dusty trucks, and a little dirt on the fuel tank. These units always had half moon scratches on the fuel tank where the fuel cap would bounce around when hanging from the chain. The white strips below the vents always had some small rust streaks running down from the vent frames, and they often had a bit of a black streak coming off of the nose against the windows. That’s about all I think it needs. Maybe a bit of a black wash on the white hinges.

–Received some new boards from Navin, so my entire SD45 fleet is up to date. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Okay, we’ll let you go that far!!

Fantastic work, it looks great

Colin

John, now that the weathers nice, everything is on hold. No weathering for now. My summers are too short to waste in the house. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

Thanks Colin. Good to hear from one of my clansman. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)

Here’s a short video of a light engine move at dusk on some temporary track in the backyard.

Hot damn you are running outside!
