SD60f Build

@Joe - As anyone who posts build logs knows, it is a lot of work to document your progress. I never expect someone to copy my work exactly. In fact, I’m honored when I see someone use a technique I posted, and even that doesn’t happen often. So why do I do it? First, I hope to inspire others to try things. I’ve used ideas gained from build logs in my projects both on the railroad and at work. If I can pass on just a few ideas to others the documentation was worth the effort. Second is for my own reference. I often refer back to old builds to see how I did something. I would never keep detailed notes like a build log just for myself, but since it’'s there it gets used for that. Last is to engage others in conversation.

So, give it a shot, you might be surprised (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

I think everyone needs a photo. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Cab is starting to take shape.

So Shane, are you going to be brave and try slide glass?

I’d say I would cut some pieces and send the piece, but I think your better off not getting a pile of broken slide glass!

@ Jon,

I post a build log for the two reasons you gave. I can’t count how many times I’ve referenced my own thoughts as I progress.

Double post

Triple post, just to get my post count for the day.

Cab is starting to take shape.

I need details

Thank you Richard

Craig, I’m going to stick with something that won’t cut me. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)Oh oh, I hogged your daily posts.

Richard, I’ll have to work out some measurements for the style of cab you need. The side of the cab is a little shorter as there are no side doors, and the window set up matches the standard cabs.

looks great!!!

Thanks John. I’m down to the nose, so by next week the cab might make it into the paint shop. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Boy, it’s getting close.

Still needs number boards, class lights, rear step detail, and roof side drip trim. I think I should be done by Sunday. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)Then I’ll have to complete this build log. HAH!

I love it !!

The old goats may disagree but modeling modern mainline equipment is JUST as difficult as modeling steam. There are just as many details and small things that often get overlooked when modeling modern stuff. However if it isn’t there then folks notice that it doesn’t look just right.

You have done a fantastic job .

This is just my opinion!

can I see how you made the hinges and door handles?

great work

Wow Shane, the cab looks great!

Chris

Thanks Guys. Done! Heading to the paint shop. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

John, do you need it right away, or can you wait for the build log. I’ll do the cab log next as Richard wants to see it, and I’ll do the tail log last.

WOW, and double WOW! great job on this, If the pictures had the right background they wold look 1:1 for sure. Cant wait for just out of the paint shop pictures.

Seeing the up close shoot of the battery box door, reminds me of the time I liberated a locomotive cab key from a than new Dash 9. When we got on the power in Seattle, I noticed that the battery box latches were still sealed. I couldn’t quite reach up without a ladder, but I figured we would be stopping on the mountain some where and it would be possible to stand on the snow bank and access the door latch. A few hours later, I had my locomotive key. Now they lock the cabs with a switch lock.

Craig, that was unsportsmanship of them to do that. Almost all construction equipment from a manufactuer has 1 key to operate anything from a small backhoe to D10 bulldozers to 200ton mine trucks. So with about 10 keys you can open doors and run almost any piece of equipment out there. Is it the same for locomotives, with 1 key you can run any EMD loco??

Holy moly, even without paint that cab looks incredible!!

Thanks Guys.

Well it’s now sporting the basic paint job. Now I have to let it dry for a week before I apply markings and start painting the details.
