Harry Truman got in his car and drove home to Missouri after his terms were up. Eisenhower was a General and treated like such by the military establishment before and after his term in office. In the last 50 years, these professional politicians have raised themselves to monarchy status by a Press that wants them to be. There are very few that I would want on my side in a bar fight. We all have to judge every person we meet. Politicians are certainly not very high on the food chain, though many think they are.

I could be wrong, I don’t know. I know a lot more “hockey moms” than I know lawyers.

Sept 1, 2008. I'm just saying, if Palin wanted to put rumors to rest the way to do it would simply be to release the birth certificate for Trig. Instead, she makes this choice to parade her daughter's pregnancy before the media. That's just weirdSpeaking for myself, I’m delighted the her daughter decided to have and keep the kid. I want abortions to be safe legal and rare. But why am I supposed to praise her for making a decision that Palin and McCain want to take away?
I know conservatives think liberals prefer killing babies, are against life etc, but this reinforces what a lot of liberals believe which is the McCain is all for choice for people he knows, for his family, but not for other people. I’d like everyone to have the right to make the choice bristol made. That’s why it’s called pro-choice.
I’m not usually good at predicting, but I’m predicting by Friday Palin is out as VP.
Hey Mike! My advice is: don’t play the lotto, either!

Nah, I’ll let ya use your imagination…;
Ken Brunt said:You are right Ken. That is much of the problem. Another part of the problem is the two party system. Like I said before, a majority of people wouldn't vote for Jesus if he was registered with the other political party. We pay way too much attention to the label and not enough attention to the package. Ralph
Mike, maybe that's the whole problem. We don't send people to Washington that ARE just like us...............maybe we should be sending them. The kinds of people that don't have to kiss up to people they don't like, but DO know how to work with people they don't like. Like us ordinary folk do our entire lives.

I agree. One additional problem is “professional” politicians. I think one term is enough for anyone and then let them return to private life and live with their inaction or the laws they helped to make and imposed upon the rest of us. Anyway, if they can’t steal enough in one term that’s their problem.
Well,
Mrs. Palin quickly picked up the ways of a professional politician in her two years as governor of Alaska.
From the Washington Post.
ANCHORAGE - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a “per diem” allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.
Spent 312 out of 365 nights at home and billed the State.
Ralph
All the judges in the world could tell me to quit going after someone, but if that person threatened a member of my family, its going to take more than a “dysfunctional lawyer” to slow me down, let alone stop me.

I’m glad you don’t look into my finances. I get the same “per diem” when I travel. Even on the days I arrive home and the days I leave home.

On the taxpayer’s dime, Ken?
I wasn’t on 'taxpayer" (state) business…

The difference is she was at home…not traveling.
She stays at her home most of the time and not the Governor’s mansion. Charged the travel per diem every day she was not staying at the mansion.
I guess she figured that "technically "she was traveling, since she wasn’t at the Governor’s mansion.
Ralph
What Ralph said. In addition to her salary, she charged taxpayers extra for days she chose to work at home, instead of at the governor’s mansion.
An when she traveled to conferences, she brought her kids, and charged the Alaskan taxpayers for them as well.
Maverick!
What you don’t show is how Alaska compensates their state officials, what constitutes an allowance for “per diem” pay, who or what makes the determination of how, when and why an official receives it, who exactly put in for it, the governor or her secretary or whoever, what she was doing all that day, where she was doing it and I far as I know I’ve never heard of a governor that worked shift work…most governors spend their nights sleeping, not working.
Personally I can’t picture a governor sitting at a desk filling out a “time sheet” for what she did all day.
Or it could just be the state’s compensation for her phone bill and other utility usage when she’s working at home…hell, it may have saved the taxpayers some money.
Here is the latest:
" CHICAGO (AFP) - Republican vice presidential pick Sarah Palin faced accusations Sunday of handing jobs to friends while serving as Alaska state governor, as the presidential campaign grew increasingly negative.
The New York Times reported that Palin had given the 95,000-dollar-a-year directorship of the state division of agriculture to a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, who cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the agency"
I love cows also. Particularly on the grill.
Five other high paying jobs to high school classmates. Not necessarily a bad thing IF they were qualified. I’m sure we will be hearing more about this.
Ralph
So you’re saying she MAY have given out SIX WHOLE patronage jobs?cool… 6 compared to HOW many Slick Willy gave out to friends and relations in Arkinsawz? 6 Compared to how many your average city councilman in Chicago gives out each year. Heck a whole 6 compared to what our beloved state reps give out (when they aren’t voting themselves a midnight pay raise)
I love these political hatchet jobs and witch hunts…(often tells as much about the reporter and editor as the candidate, don’t it?) I just wish they’d look at ALL of them under the same microscope.
This is bizarre! I’ve been witness to many a presidential campaign but this is the first one in my memory where the political bloggers of a presidential candidate expend so much of their energies campaigning against the vice presidential candidate of the other party.
Perhaps Obama has so little to offer that he feels it easier to campaign against second string Palin than first string McCain? I guess he really isn’t ready for the big leagues yet.
Obvious too is the fact that there are no Republican blog sites raking Obama or Biden over the coals with trumped up charges, otherwise the fair minded, fact oriented scholars we have here would have brought them to our attention in the interest of truth would they not? Hmmmm?
Hey Richard.
It took me precisely 5 seconds to locate at least 10 sites where the Republicans are attacking Biden with “trumped up charges”.
Perhaps those erudite contributors here will find them just as easily and you will have your request granted poste haste.

Hehe Tony. Precisely my point. Don’t hold your breath waiting for the posts to appear here though.
