Large Scale Central

Sandhouse Build..

I started this a week ago. It is being built for a friend of mine that I met at the National Garden Railroad Convention in Cincinattti, Ohio. It is built from cedar, pinned and glued with Tite Bond III.

To start with I needed a way to cut board and batten siding. So I have a molding dado set. I didn’t have the correct knife set so I used this set of knives for the cuts, I only needed a 1/8 inch depth cut so it worked out ok. Inn the future I will try to find a 3/8 wide Sears Craftsman set for this…

Up next is the board that I cut…

This is what I come up with using the above molding set…The grooves are 3/8 wide and 1/8 x 1/8 batten. I cut them this way all one piece to prevent them from seperating as the model gets older and exposed to the outdoors…

I planed the board down to 3/8 thickness pieces were cut to size and had to butt joint them to get the required width, I couldn’t find the right dimension around here for the boards needed. Also if you look carefully I removed the battens where the doors are going to be locate. They will be glued over the top of the sides as they are not going to be functional so no reason to cut the openings out for them…

Next fitting sides to the gabled ends. everything fit nice and ready for glue…

Sides all glued and squared. Now ready to be roofed. You can also see the braces I glued in to the sides and ends to give it extra strength at the joints. Next time I will probably go with 1/2 inch instead of 3/8 for cedar as it gets flimsy when ya plane it down…

Roof pieces planed down to rhe needed 3/16 thickness and ready to attach…

Roof glued and pinned. ready for tar paper roofing…

Next is the sand tower… pinned and glued…

Next I have the cedar slats cut for the doors…

This is where I stand as of last night. Today I will install the slats for the simulated doors. Hopefully this will come out the way I hope it too look… more to come… Thanks for looking… Travis

Travis, that’s coming along nicely. thanks for sharing.

Looking good. Amazing how fast it goes together. Keep us posted with the progress.

Looks good so far. Keep up the good work…

Travis: awesome work. I need to make one of these for my Chama yard that I hope to start on this summer. I have a question though. where did you get your drawings? I have not been able to locate any.

Looking Good, is your RR kept inside?
Dennis

Thanks Dan, The drawings came from Brewerplans. They have many structures, bridge, and water tower plans available @ Brewerplans.com

Thanks Dennis, This belongs to Naptowneng ( Jerry ) over at MLS he is from Maryland. It will be an outdoor structure used on his Ry.

Thanks Travis, I will take a look at what they have. I already have a set of the D&RGW 1909 drawings for the Tank, so I am good there. Just need the Sandhouse and coaling tower drawings.
