Rotary Snow Plow Build

I got a start on my rotary snow plow. I am basing it on the UP 900081 plow. The 900082 is still operational and in their roundhouse in Cheyenne, it is so shiny it is hard to get a picture of it! Here is 81 in St Louis museum.

It is 52’ long so the Aristo B unit works fine for it’s chassis. I will use it’s power trucks also. I got it on ebay, a guy had started a rotary but did not get far. I did use his blade he had in the box. The B unit was new, $35!

I used the blade that came with it. The shroud is a 4" plumbing cap that I turned down a bit on the lathe so that it would fit inside. I built up around it with 1/8" plastic.

I am using a old 12 volt drill, I plan to use a 18 volt battery, Ron Senek did that in his rotary to make it spin faster, he said it worked great. I added some re-infocement angles that are glued/screwed. Just screwed to the frame though. I am ging to put aluminum angle along the top of the frame to strengthen it and widen the body some, if you look at the above photos you can see it hangs over some.

Now that looks like it’ll do some serious snow plowing. Can’t wait to see it finished…

Your out of control Jerry!
I can’t wait to see it finished either!!!

OK, Jerry… We expect it to be complete by Monday, as we all want to see the finished product… hehehe But, don’t forget pictures as you progress…

Working on it till I get my plans for 844 anyway. Gonna power wash the barn tomorrow, then try to paint it, except for the high areas, will find some fool for that! So, probably won’t be much on this for a week or so.

So, will this be done in time for Marty’s?

Pretty neat.

Doubt it.

Hehe. The pressure is on! Bring it anyway - I’d like to see it close up. I’m planning on bringing the Mikado, but it won’t be close to being done.

Jerry when you @ Marty’s take some pics / ask some question about his blower! Sean

Marty wrote an article about making the blower, was in the Aristo insider thing a few years back.

I screwed on some aluminum angle to reinforce the frame, was sagging a bit with the heavy load. May have to beef up the springs, anyone done that?

I used plumber’s tape to hold down the drill motor.

Jerry,
How heavy is it?

I haven’t tried beefing up the springs on anything, but if I thought about it I’d sure go to McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#compression-and-die-springs/=3hi2q1

That really looks like an automotive water pump impeller. I have pitched so many of them and thinking every time I should be saving one!
I really like the drill chuck idea though.

I thought it looks like vacume cleaner impeller, or maybe from a pool pump. But you could be right. Maybe the stuff I drive and fix is old. My water pump impellers never had that many veins. I think a water pump impeller would be the thing to use. Ralph

It came with the B unit that I got on ebay, not sure what it came from. Cut the plastic for the sides today, but had quite a few chores to do and did not get back to it.

After some power washing on the barn I got a little done on the exhaust chute. I used some thin wall 4" pipe for the curves on the chute. It is just sitting on top, will do some more sanding and re-inforce it a big more inside.

Now back to painting the barn! Sigh…

Looking good sir!
At least it should be functional before the snow flies.

Looks good!

Can you direct the snow to either side? Most prototypes could do that so the snow was blown on the downhill side of the track.

I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Might be able to make to top piece that the chute is attached to removable and reversible. That might come in very hand when actually using it.

Looking great so far.

Are we going to get pictures of the barn???
