Ron's Live Steam Micro

This is one of three features of my Micro Layout. This one being a coal mine. The other is a shack, and the third is a pond with a waterfall. First I cut and framed in the opening for the mine and then attached it to 1/4" plywood. I then attached balled up newspaper for the mountain part along with tape and used Woodland Scenic Plaster Cloth to cover it. Once dry, I gave it a watered down coat of earth tone paint and then a coat of blackwash. Next I applied Woodland Scenic turf and grass. A 32mm track was hand laid for the mine shaft. Will post more photos as this project develops.

crumpled newspapers - i have to remember that.

the result seems worth to be copied.

Ron, I like the live steam in that title. The modeling so far is fantastic. Can’t wait to see how all these features will play together.

Cool, off to a great start

Thanks Guys! Next I cut two sheets of 7/16" OSB bottom sheet 40" x 80", upper 3" smaller, sandwiched in with 1 x 4.

Wow Ron, are two 7/16 plywood sheets not going to be very heavy? How is this going to be moved, or is it fixed to one place?

Hi Vic, Its Going into a permanent corner of my garage. I think.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Micro is progressing…here are some more pics (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Maybe consider table legs with lockable wheel castors under the legs. I use these on my movable layout base and it really does help when I have to push the layout out of the way.

Looks great. I’t very neat how two people can give the same size loop such a different feel. Lots of activity in your micro, the pond is fun.

Thanks for the tip Vic, But I think once I place it, it will stay permanently. Thanks Randy, I liked how Vic has a lot going on with his pizza layouts. And a thanks to Shawn V who gave me the round track that I hand bent. More pics this weekend.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

You’ve been very busy!

It’s DONE!!! It took about 3 weeks total and enjoyed every bit of the build. Here are the final pictures. Stay tuned for videos next weekend.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

yessir, that is nice!

please enlighten me about the how-to of the waterfall.

the birch trees - bought or homespun?

I love the heck out of these micros. Need to get some things done so I can start mine. This tri gauge idea I have floating around is bursting to be built in my basement.

Great job and I used the crumbled newspaper idea in HO for along time until I will went to carved foam.

Very nice work Ron!! I have thought of doing a micro similar to this for some time now, so I will be filing this one away for future reference

Thanks guys, Korm, the waterfall looks even better today after it cures. its from “Woodland Scenics” Comes in a squeeze bottle. its called water effects. you squeeze it on to wax paper, the size and shape you want and let it cure for a few days. then peel it off the paper. then use the same water effects to spot glue it.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

thanks.

additional question: that stuff stays flexible after curing?

Korm, Yes it stays flexible. it reminds me of silicone. it forms to any contour. and the longer it cures the more transparent it gets.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

wow Ron that looks great. I have to finish mine this winter now that I have a spot in the basement for it. Ill have to get some of that stuff to creat water for my creek. Thats just what I was looking for.

Now you can run all winter long. Now we need a video
