Large Scale Central

Ron's Build Challenge 2014

Well the door finally arrived in the wilds of British Columbia, Canada. Here is a picture of my inspiration, no napkin plans, construction will begin on the weekend.

Hey thats a great looking gas station Ron, thats just down the street from your house isn’t it? LOL
I can’t wait to see it in person.

Chuck

Is that as far as the pickup truck got after filling up on that 5 cent gas?

OK, now that I zoomed in, I see it is a 5 cent discount for cash.

Well, finally got the honey-do project finished and now have some time to do this.

First pic is of the outside frame and the floor beams before assembly

And then of the assembled base. All wood is Western Red Cedar

This is the base with the door about where it will go.

With a couple of rows of logs in place.

Next will be to add two more rows and then build and fit the windows.

Managed to get the floor installed. Cut from spruce.

Thats it for today.

Looking good. Very nice start to a great project.

Doc Tom

A good start. It is neat to see the humble door standing by interesting constructions.

Okay, on to the windows. Took some 1/8 by 3/8 ply and cut a 1/16 dado in it.

Then cut the pieces to length. Here are all the parts needed to make one window.

Here are a couple of views of a complete window.

Here are the windows and door set in place, with a couple more rows of logs added.

And a couple with all the walls up to height.

Here I am fitting the beams for the overhang.

Next will be making and fitting all the rafters and ceiling joists. Things will slow down now as it is back to work tomorrow.

Enjoy.

Ron

Nice work, Ron;)

Off to a great start, Looking really nice!

Those windows look great Ron. I think I just found another use for my dado… HA

BOY I’m getting lots of cool ideas from you clever guys.

A little more progress. Got all the parts cut for the roof trusses. Here is a pic of the parts and then one of an assembled truss.

Sheeted this one with some thin cedar, it will be the rear of the building.

Thats all for now.

Ron

A little more progress. Got the roof trusses in place except for the last one.

Tomorrow will get the last truss up and start putting the strapping on in preparation for the roofing. Also work on the base for the front support posts and the gas pump.

Nice work, and a very cool prototype! Do you happen to know where that gas station is?

Ron that is a real neat design
Dennis

Thanks Ray. The original is in Hardy, Arkansas.

Ron

Good work Ron. It looks like an impressive model coming along.

Very good workmanship. That is coming together very nicely.

Tom

Well, started out trying to make the foundation for the front posts and the gas pump. Was hunting around the garage and came across a bag of concrete. So, made a mold out of styrofoam,

Mixed up the concrete and poured it in. Added a little hardware cloth for strength. Will see tomorrow if it worked. If not, plan B

Then got the strapping on the roof

And started on the shakes.

Hope to get the shakes finished tomorrow.

Was wondering if anyone has cut out the window in the door, and how you did it?

Ron

Nice work Ron
