2 - 89 ft TOFC’s & one 89 ft autorack (scratch built), one Automax (scratch built)… Have numerous cars still in boxes, not inventoried and not setup to run yet…

My operating era is the late 70’s to early 80’s

Anyway I could see pic’s of some of these??

Nice roster.

Joe, here are pictures:

Thanks Andy! I think I saw the tofc at Marty’s before. That art autorack is great too!! I’ve got to make some of those!

Three a-c gp-40s three a-c c-16 1 a-c dash9 3-bachman-climax 1 bachman forney 1 bachman k-27 and a few usa, sone to have bellflower criket

Enough RhB stuff to run the trains that need to be run. Two wayfreights, two through freights, two local passenger trains and two express trains. By far not as much stuff as any of you have listed so far.

I forgot to post my list after seeing those art autoracks!!!

My problem is I’ve bought whatever I could get my hands on. I have older era tank cars and box cars that I’ll pull with my Challengers made by diff manu.

I prefer modern and have acquired a bunch of diesels. So my favorites are USA modern rolling stock and Aristo’s Evans cars and the like. I have a couple of just about everything. Spread out way too much.

I’d like to get more MTH TOFCs and their coal cars. I bought a bunch of Aristo’s and want to make up some unit trains in coal, covered hoppers, etc.

Reading the responses here it seems that many have started in the hobby without a clear idea of their RR but instead buy all they can when it presents itself at a decent price. I’m the same way. Luckily with most items we can resell and get our money back to put toward soemthing different as our focus narrows and the RR becomes more refined.

Shawn V admitted to having the smallest roster and I’m kind of envious that he can contain himself and as we have seen with his terrific photos his is a really nice well run RR. I think his approach is more in line with a real RR. Of course I would like to narrow my focus but what did I do yesterday I bought another Bachmann hopper from Ebay. I couldnt’ resist the price was too good!! Am I addicted?

Has anyone dared to put their collections out on the tracks to see if it would fit and snap a photo for us?

Todd,

It all depends how long one has been in the hobby and how one got started. From what I read, this is Shawn’s first RR experience i.e. no bad habits to unlearn. (hehehe) Many model railroaders remind me of binge eaters who very seldom go on a diet. Some (most) of that stuff is just “too good” to pass up.

Back in '76 I decided: specific era, specific railway… and got rid of all that didn’t fit - this was still in HO standard gauge. Next I switched to NG (HOm), sold almost all the SG stuff. Moving West in '99 meant dismantling the LARGE NG layout. Sold most of it and started to replace the HOm items with 2m equivalents. Still same era, same railway, but a lot less track etc. etc. In Large Scale I (we) bought a lot less and are scratchbuilding a lot more. The peculiar result is … more scenery and less railway. Almost like in the 1:1 scene.

I’m modeling 1980ish. Modeling Detroit Toledo and Ironton means painting and decaling much of my road equipment.

Here was my first modification. LGB railbox cars that I scratchbuilt P-S doors and added the compass logo panels. I also filled the screw holes for the roof screws. I did the painting and decaling. Here’s 3 of them:

Then I tried a little more work. Started with the LGB Railbox but scratchbuilt the plug doors:

Next up was a string of hopper cars. DT&I used 3 bay cars but of the type 2 ACF design. So I started with the LGB centerflows but scraped off the horizontal angle brace on the side and added the 2 smaller horizontal braces near the top of the sides Look at the ACY car partially shown on the right of this picture and compare the body to the DT&I cars to see the difference:

Now I wanted a string of coal hopper cars so I bought some USA 70 ton black data only cars and put decals on them (Stan Cedarleaf was doing my white decals at this time):

Now, about this time was when Burl was making his 60’ HiCube boxcar kits and I wanted them…I wished I’d have bought more since he’s ceased producing these:. Here’s the 3 I built and had Stan make decals for:

Now was my time to start scratchbuilding complete cars…so I started with a caboose:

Then scratchbuilt a 40’ HiCube boxcar. By now I had my own ALPS printer and was doing the white decals myself:

Here was a picture taken on my old (since torn down) outdoor elevated railroad at about this time in my evolution:

The next scratchbuilt project was a Railgon gondola:

Then a scratchbuilt 2 bay P-S PS2CD hopper car:

Not done yet, I tried my hand at building a Whitehead and Kales Coilcar:

After that I tried tackling my largest project. An 86’ HiCube boxcar:

Since then I’ve bought several USA 60’ boxcars that I’ve modified and painted…here’s one such car:

I’ve bought a couple USA autracks and will add more when I get to a place where I can put up a layout. At this point I’ve taken down my indoor layout and have most of these cars displayed or in boxes awaiting retirement and a move to a warmer/drier climate.

That’s my story

Brian, some excellent workmanship… Have been admiring it for years…

Exactly what I was thinking. I remember quite a few of those builds. It’s pretty impressive to see them posted all together.

That is funny “no bad habits to unlearn” and even funnier and so true about the binge eaters.

We should be happy with less but MORE always seem better.

You have some really nice and unique equipment Brian.

Are you sure Andy ? Ive been told I have nice toes…

Your auto rack car and flat cars are sweet looking. I have 8 flat cars myself, These 2 are out of there boxs being converted to ball bearings because there metal and weigh alot after 8 hours of use they wore out the aristo metal axle bushings.

They do run nice and look good in a train.

Brians work is awesome, but unlike him I missed out on getting some of Burls cars kits they were Awesome indeed. My hopes is that Burl comes back to the Hobby and sells his car kits again.

P.S.

If anyone has any of Burls kits they want to get rid of please PM me I will buy them.

Nick, yeah, they do look great… nice video, too…

I never did get any of Burl’s kits, either…

Don’t need to see your toes, I’ll take your word on it…

Brian, WOW!! what a roster.

Wish I had even heard of Burl when he offered those. Outstanding.

These posts are getting good.

Brian do you mare pics of the indoor layout, I’m curious to see more.

Vic, Brian posted pics and a trackplan in this topic here:

http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/16144/custom-painted-usa-60-foot-boxca

(I apparently have literally every topic on here bookmarked)

Not as many as I want.

More than I need
