Rolling Stock What do you have?

Howdy Railfans.

Lately I have had my eye out looking for a center beam or bulk head flat car and I got to thinking about all the variations of rolling stock, standard to custom built by RR shops.

I think we all have boxcars in 20’ 30’ 40’ 50 ', gondolas, flats and a pasenger car or 2.

On my rolling stock roster these cars will be found.

Boxcars. wood and steel, reefer and van.

Flat cars and depressed center

Gondolas high sided and low.

Hoppers open and enclosed

Passenger cars, baggage, combine, coach, open air, observation.

Mow cars, Crane and tender, plus support boxcars, small crane and flats.

Rotary plow and wedge.

Tank cars older style long and short.

Fire fighting car.

Skeleton log cars

Various Cabeeses.

I’m sure I forgot a few. I want my RR ready to be able to handle anything that might come along freight wise. I’m thinking I need a drop end gondola and a center beam flat.

Any suggestions for my average non modern RR?

So what kind of rolling stock do you have on your rosters?

My inventoried rolling stock roster contains a little over 250 freight cars, ranging from 2 bay covered hoppers to an automax… roster consists of 2-bay covered hoppers, 3 & 4 bay covered hoppers, 40 ft boxcars, 40 ft flatscars, 40 ft bulkend flatcars, 40ft woodchip cars, 40 ft gondolas, 40 ft centerbeam cars, 40 ft 3-bay coal hoppers, 100 ton coal hoppers, 50 ft boxcars, 50 ft refrigerators cars, 53 ft evans boxcars, 60 foot boxcars, 89 ft USA autoracks, 2 - 89 ft TOFC’s & one 89 ft autorack (scratch built), one Automax (scratch built)… Have numerous cars still in boxes, not inventoried and not setup to run yet…

My operating era is the late 70’s to early 80’s

I only have around 125 cars, mostly the 34’, 40’ and 50’ variety with one 53’ Evans box.

What a fun thread,I will go count and get back with Yaaaaaaaaaaaa’s.

I thought about this…And realized it would take hours to create a list; it’s time for a major purge. Way too much stuff.

:frowning:

Mines easy. Logging railroads did not need much. I have the smallest roster.

2 boxcars

4 flat cars

1 tank car.

1 plow car

1 fire fighting car

1 work caboose

3 boxcars

3 skeleton cars

2 log buggies

3 dissconnects

3 passanger cars

2 gondolas

my 4 wheeled stuff

3 flats

1 boxcar

1 logging caboose

bunch of HLW mini series stuff. (ore cars, flats and gondolas)

Probably in reality too many for the pizza, too few for the harbor layout, but lots of cars means I have alot of selection for shows even if invariably I pack the same cars for each show, D’oh!

Most of my stock on the pizza is HLW minicar variants most of the harbor is modified Scientific cars that have had trucks added and repainted. I prefer these as they have the look of mainline 40’ cars but are shorter and thereby fit better on that tiny layout.

I recently broke out my long time engine and car roster and split it into two separate ones for the pizza and for the harbor. It makes keeping track of whats for where much easier, although visually its easy, the pizza cars all have link/pin couplers, the harbor have Bmann knuckles.

No list, take too long to type out, my roster is actually drawn on AutoCAD, been so since the start, somewhere on my home computer I have a list of the complete history of my RRs purchases and sales, it is frighten how much I have acquired and sold over the last decade.

That’s a great idea Vic. I have drawn my rolling stock in MasterCam AND I have an inventory in Word. BUT I NEVER thought about combining them! Good tip! Thanks.

WOW you guys have some serious equipment! I will have to show my wife some of the lists here, she thinks I’m NUTZ and that I have way too many trains but my collection is really meager compared to soem of the empires out there.

I did forget on my list 2 stock cars, a odometer car, and a whole bunch of 2 axle LGB, hartland and bachmann types. I did a quick count and came up with about 125 pieces of rolling stock on my roster.

Question is will all your rolling stock fit on your mainline at the same time?

Anyone care to line their collections up and snap a photo for us?

Next new topic question should be how many locomotives or pieces with engines in them do you have.

Andy your photo at Marty’s? Looks REAL. Very cool.

I have at least one example of every piece of rolling-stock or steam/deisel engine Lionel produced for ‘Large Scale’…Not just type but road-name. Many more from LGB/USA/Aristo/etc. Not really proud of that fact, gotta cut back.

:frowning:

Me too! Way too much stuff. It’s time to take the trucks, wheels and couplers off to sell and toss the shells. Why I keep this stuff, I’ll never know.

It’s far from complete, but I am bulding a Photo Roster with some car history here in the Photo Albums at http://www.largescalecentral.com/albums/view/11756 and in the CVSRy Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CVSRy

I’ve done a pretty good job of paring down what I don’t run / need over the last 3 or 4 years. I’m still hanging on to a bit of 1:29 stuff, but i don’t really know why.

Todd Haskins said:

Answer: yes, mine will, actually, with room left over…

Anyone care to line their collections up and snap a photo for us?

Answer: Not really, unless it all comes out an Operatiing session, but then I’d need a helicopter to take the picture from…

Next new topic question should be how many locomotives or pieces with engines in them do you have.

Answer: Motive power listed in my Railop file is currently 34 power units…

these consist of: RDC 1 & 3’s, 44 tonner, NW-2 Cow & calfs, GP-38’s, GP-40’s, SD40-2’s, SD-45’s, Dash 9’s. Have a couple of S-4’s, not in the inventory…

Andy your photo at Marty’s? Looks REAL. Very cool.

Answer: Todd, yes that last picture was at Marty’s, quite a few years ago, before Marty made his own autoracks and TOFC’s… and, Thank you…
