Rolling stock? How about your pulling power?

You guys listed an amazing collection of rolling stock and now for the list of what you use to pull all that freight and passengers around your pikes adn anything else that has a motor in it.

List them and note your favorite and why.

My list

USAT. GP38, NW2 both custom painted . a Alco S4, a Mighty Moe, a Speeder.

LGB. C+S Forney, a 2-4-0 from a starter set, Stainz #3, Red 0-4-0 , a yellow diesel switcher, hand pumper.

Hartmann. Mack with racing stripes, side pipes ands roll bar.

Aristocraft. Railbus

Bachmann. 38 ton 2 truck Shay, Climax, Heisler, a Baldwin 2-6-6-2, a 2-4-2, a porter, a 4-6-0 from a starter set,

Home made. The MAC speeder, a diesel switcher and a caboose racer.

Once again like the rolling stock list it is more than I need but I like them. My favorites are the Heisler and Climax but what gets the most run time is the NW2 since it heads out first with the leaf litter plow and track cleaner and it usually ends up staying on the track and shuttling freight around.

Now please list what you have for power on your layout and what your favorite is.

I have 3 USAT NW-2s. 1 remains as PRR, 2 converted to SW-7 for the Raritan River RR.

A PRR GP-9 that I bought from Brian at the D&B this year.

I think that’s everything…? Every year I do a floor layout at a local train show, and many people express surprise and concern at how I only run steam. Apparently in the smaller scales steam is significantly less reliable. I haven’t had any major issues outside of early Bachmann.

Steam:

#2 - Freedom Class 0-4-0 - LGB Stainz

#1 1/4 - S.30.a 2-4-0 Switcher - LGB Mini Mike

#36 - Pacifikado Class - Aristo Mike

Diesel:

#112 - 65-ton Centercab - USA 44-ton Mod

#113 - 44-ton Mother/Slug Set - USA 44-ton (x2) bash

Mainly a diesel guy…

and

got a couple of steamers too.

Numerous in many scales, but I have decided to cut WAY back. I am assembling consists for each engine and then selling off what’s left.

As I am concentrating on 1:20.3 at the moment…

I have one or more of the following, all outfitted with Kadee couplers and outfitted or in progress of being fitted with DCC, mostly QSI Titans.

Diesel:

Aristo e8’s including custom chrome B unit from Rex A.
6 additional pounds of lead in fuel tank
custom stainless steel wheels
dual speakers and QSI Titans
Like them a lot, will pull anything once minor electrical issues sorted

USAT F3’s in both freight and passenger
Removed traction tires and sliders
Added sleeves to axles to prevent cracking
Will be modifying coupler stands to allow center set couplers, offset couplers are bs.
Reasonable pulling power, they need additional weight
Wish they had added ball bearings, both in the motor block and the journals

USAT S4
nice looking
traction tires and sliders removed
axles sleeved to stop cracking
switcher so pulling power not an issue

USAT 44 Tonner
cute switcher
as S4 above

USAT NW-2 cow and calf
different looking
treated as S4

USAT GP7
modifications as above, similar to F3’s

USAT GP38
modifications as above, similar to F3’s

Aristo doodlebug
for fun, never pull more than one coach
typical Aristo wiring issues to convert to DCC
typical Aristo 2 axle motor block issues

USAT PA-1 and PB-1
treated as USAT F3
3 axle block lubed and smoothed to improve running
like F3, could use weight for better traction

Aristo RDC-1 and -3
like the doodlebug, typical issues with 2 axle block,
needs some modification at trucks to give more flexibility
long wheelbase needs better track
remove traction tires, runs much better

Aristo RS-3
crazy old design lots of parts and screws
pilots need modification to keep couplers aligned
added second speaker and “put” bell & horn from cab
added stainless steel wheels
pulls fine, filled fuel tank with lead

Misc railcars.

Steam.
I got tired of typing, so won’t detail every model.

I have basically all the steamers that Aristo makes, and virtually all are sidelined in search of a good solution for crappy wheel contours and back to back spacing. These locos are plagued by wheels slipping on axles poor power pickup, poor plating. I am working on a solution to add stainless steel tires on them and thus solve all the main wheel issues.

Have 2 custom locos 4-8-4 Northern, and 2-10-2 Santa Fe type custom made from Aristo geartrain and shells, same issues as all Aristo steamers

I have a number of 1:29 AML steamers, and they vary in pulling power. Very disappointed in the K4 pacific, but will regear them, other than that with a few suspension mods run great. Their 0-6-0 switcher is great, right out of the box.

I know I forgot a couple.

Greg

Same problem as Mark, too many to list. really need to think about possibly selling off or storing some more stuff that doesn’t quite fit in.

same as vic smith. I would have to say my grandson’s.

Great pic!!

Very impressive rosters gentlemen.

Lou that Toonerville sure is unique. Nice scratch build.

Greg I always thought you were more of a Aristo man but I see you have plenty of USAT product as well. Those Aristo E8s must weigh a ton with 6 pounds of extra weight in them.

That is a nice Pic Richard. Nice plumes. is that custom paint?

What I don’t get is why our diesels smoke better than steamers. I know the USAT’s have fan driven smokers that really pump it out. Why doesn’t bachmann put fan driven smokers in their units?

Keep the list going. Anymore photos of favorite locos?

Everything you can see in this album, and also a USAT Dockside loco that I seem to not have taken a picture of…

Richard, I always liked the looks of those D and H gp-38S. I need to get some of them before there gone.

Is that Larry M’s layout your running on ? Didnt he rip it all up ?

Nick

Your really nice collection Vincent looks like a train shop. I do like that photo of the saddle tanker riding the rails.

Thanks!

I didn’t realize that I had not taken a picture of the USAT Dockside loco until I seen this topic, so when I had the engine outside the other day checking the progress on my track install I snapped a quick picture with my phone…came out as nice as the ones from my real camera!
