Considering that many railroads had areas with rather close clearances, was there ever (in real life) a horse car where the horses could stick their heads out into the soot filled breeze? I have proof that an elephant car will stop a USA GP9 dead in it’s tracks spinning off the traction tires on a RR with tight tolerances.

All I can say is that Bachmann elephant trunk must be stiffer than a wedding night ROOSTER!
Perhaps there are reviews on the stiffness of the Bachmann animals . I have several and could possibly do such however I have no boxes for them.

The "horses-in-the-box car was delivered from TRAINWORLD. The item # is 98701, in the familiar Bachmann red box.
The actual title is “LS” Animated Stock Car D&RG With horses." Worth the $80.00? Depends on how long or how short in time you have managed your layout. I was looking for something new - after 14 years of operation. If I had just completed it, I might have also bought it simply because if is different - who else blows $80 on a zany, implausible, animated toy? I did.
Here’s the “how-to”: There are two sets of double-bodied horse torsos mounted on the ends of an internal plastic beam that runs behind the two sets of “horse windows”-- that’s two windows, with one on either side of the sliding door of the cattle car. The beam is supported by a single pylon in the middle of the car.
When the car moves, the pendulum swings sideways projecting a horse head out of the right and left side of the car’s windows by an inch. So the horses visually rotate back-'n-forth window-to-window in their appearance. If this is conspiracy of confusion in explanation frustrates, check the contributed video at the onset of this thread.
Dumb, sure, but now I have something to show our future dinner guests having a meal al fresco, who have seen the trains run many, many, and many times. Wow! Super! Look! There’s something new! I think I’m good at predicting who will ask how it works.
I’ll report the reactions of the innocents when they see the latest, and only new, recent contribution to the Hanks’ garden.
yeah, if we start re making Lionel cars, next we will HAVE to run trains at full throttle (Run 8 for diesel guys) , but without Magnatraction , the results will be costly.
Well, that will make the kids happy. They always want the trains to go faster.
Horse Car report:
Don’t buy one if you don’t want to check track-side clearances. Rooster is so right submitting his photo-documented elephant car example. Allow at least 1.5" on either side of the track for landscape and tunnels.
Now to the important point - the value of novelty and was it noticed by the innocents:
1 - Loving wife - “Oh, a new train item. When did you order it?”
2 - Relatives visiting - “So when’s the next camping trip?”
3 - Relatives, second response, after prod to see the “action item” - “Wonder if it will catch on something?”
What about the “exploding” LGB car - is it only a one-time use?
