Reality comes crashing in

Ah, the excitement of designing a web page with iWeb! So easy, so elegant! I was happy then. There were picnics in the park. People seemed to laugh more…

Alas, I was living in a fool’s paradise.

Then I uploaded a nearly complete version to the server. With eager anticipation I surfed to my newly minted domain. Suddenly my clean, lean design became a 6000 pound rotting elephant carcass sitting on my head. Even the simplest of pages took forever to load, usually stumbling on seemingly mundane tasks such as displaying a line around a photo. I called my brother, who has broadband, and even he had trouble with it.

After consulting with friends much more knowledgeable than I, it turns out this is the common result of using a “What You See Is What You Get” web app. Easy to use, but adds all kinds of clunky code that bogs everything down once it’s actually put to the test.

Oy.

Dont know what your looking for but try Angelfire.com i used it not easy but if i can do it anybody can check out my pages it did with it click on the link here.

That is why I write my own code. HTML is not that hard to learn.
I will trade with you Ray. You biuld me a railroad I will biuld you a website.

Geoff, I hope you like rocks…

Why would you want a website anyway?
Just more crap to deal with in life.

I sell photos and occasionally some hobby products, and also use it to promote the rocketry booklets I've written.

Ray,

There is WYSIWYG and then there is WYSIWYG, sooo you pick a different app that doesn’t bog down the code with all that “crud”.

Is that a book on ‘Rocketry’ or ‘Rockery’ Science?

That's good to know. I may try another app if I can't get things worked out with this one. Can you suggest one that will work on a Mac?

Right now I’m just making some changes to eliminate some of the things that appear to be “problem areas” with this app. Then I’ll upload it tonight and see if it makes any difference in the performance.

I'm no scientist, just a hobbyist. I've written two brief booklets, one titled "A Guide to Staging High Power Rockets"; and another called, "A Guide To Rocket Aerial Photography". They're part of a series of booklets published by Rocketeer Media, publisher of Extreme Rocketry magazine. If you're interested here's a link:

Ray,

Sorry, I’ve been stuck with Wingoofs since 1992.
However for what you would like to do I’d download the Shutter-Bugs demo from xtralean.com and try it out. Especially suited for photo stuff. If I remember correctly there was a write-up in one of the photo mags, I’ll have a look if I can find it.

Ray -

Email me a link to your in-progress site and I’ll take a look and see if I can spot the trouble. No miracles guaranteed, but it might be something simple and not just the sloppy code. I’ve used Front Page and it is very verbose in the code department, but downloading html code is pretty quick. It might be something else like image sizes.

Jon

The site is www.raydunakin.com. I uploaded a new version last night, performance is slightly better but there are still problems.

I don’t think the photo size is an issue. None of the photos are large, and most have been posted previously in my albums on the Epson site without any trouble. Maybe something in the way iWeb handles photos?

Hi Ray -

I didn’t open every photo, but I looked at nearly every page, and I don’t think the performance is that bad. I’ve certainly been on websites that are much worse. One think that seems to lag is loading the small navigation thumbnails when a photo is clicked on, but even that only takes a few seconds.

As a disclaimer, I’m on a pretty fast broadband connection. Tests at 3998 kbps via Giganews Speed Test.

Jon

Thanks. I’ve also heard from a couple friends with cable internet who said the new version isn’t too bad. It’s still fairly awful though for anyone on dialup.

There’s still a few things I want to try to tweak it a little. And I’m not real happy with the way the photo album works. When someone clicks on a photo thumbnail, it ought to open the larger photo in a plain window. Instead, it loads all the headings, text and graphics that are on the album’s main page along with the larger image of the photo.

I took a look and it loaded fine for me.

i just finished uploading what will probably be the last beta version of my website.

www.raydunakin.com

I’ve streamlined things a bit more, improved navigation, and added a lot more content. At my end, on dialup, it’s not exactly speedy but it’s acceptable.

I still have to add a few more pages, add more photos and create a bit more content. Thee are a lot of photos on the site already but many more to come. For instance, I plan to have all my ghost town photos posted by name, in alphabetical order for easy reference. Currently there are only a few on the site. And I’ve barely touched the family photos.

I have some photos of the Carrizo Gorge posted. These are older photos dating back to the mid 1970’s. A few were damaged in storage, if I can get better prints later I’ll replace those images as well as adding newer ones.

I also have pics of the Poway Midland RR, and will eventually have pages for photos of other RRs.

Most of my In-ko-pah Railroad is up, but there are still a few things left to post later.

Seemed to load fine to me, too. I especially liked the Carrizo Gorge stuff. I’ve made some half hearted attempts in the past but haven’t found the gorge area. Then again, I had no idea exactly where it was located and didn’t leave the car to look either…

Ahhhh. Goat Canyon.

In another lifetime, when I was Scoutmaster of Troop 319 in La Mesa, just a couple of blocks from Reed’s, I would take the troop to Goat Canyon periodically.

The boys seemed to like it. I know that I did.
