re-BUILD LOG- IRON ISLAND RAILROAD

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin. I like the idea that you have 3 separate main lines and just like to watch trains run. But above you said, " The turnout will eventually lead to a yard and into the shop for train storage. For now, it’s just an accident waiting to happen." So If you’re going to store your trains inside the shop, how do they get to your upper loops without switches or you carrying them out one by one?

Seems to me that storing them in the shop with a connecting rail line makes it a lot easier to run anytime you want, but that’s just me. LOL BTW nice looking railroad.

Chuck

Brilliant minds think alike (I think some of the warped and twisted minds also think alike). Actually, Chuck, that’s kinda what I’m hoping for in the future. That is- I’ll eventually run the two upper loops straight in to the shop. They are at a high enough level to drive right in. The lower loop with the “accident waiting to happen” turnout, will need to go up a slight grade to get up to “shop height.” I didn’t want any grades on my mainlines, but I’ll need a slight one for the “train storage line.” I’ve made some provisions for the upper two loops here…

The top most turnout will head trains along the fence line and back to the shop. Right now… It’s another accident waiting to happen!

I also hope to build a small yard/engine service facility. I still have a bunch of room between the end of the layout and the back of the shop. It seems like the ideal place for all this- turntable, roundhouse, coaling tower, etc. (yes, I know… all this from a guy named “Dieseldude?” What’s with that?).

turntable, roundhouse, coaling tower, etc.

Holdovers from a bygone era, that’s what up width dat.

Randy has a few of those. Randy uses rubber bands to hold the points in place, and it doesn’t seam like a good solution.

well well its about time powered boxcar dude. I was about ready to give up on LSC but now I can continue. I think a more fitting beer would have been this

By the way as Ken would say ya done good.

Remember discussing the overall evil plan a while back and hearing approval from the boss! Two other gentleman witnessed and heard the official approval as well that day.

Anyone know them?

I do believe I took the picture(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

And a great job on I.I.RR#2 Kevin

IT'S OFFICIAL

The Iron Island Railroad is officially back in business.  The track cleaner was sent out to clean the rails.  Everything went off without incident.  Hard to believe.  Just as planned.

The proof is in the pudding, they say.  Make mine chocolate.

Congrats… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

We want video now!

Congrats. Just in time before the lake effect snow start up.

Moving forward…

Since all the electrical connections seem to be working and trains are running, the time has come for some nicer looking ballast. So, I picked up a load of stone dust (sounds like an illicit drug of some sort) from my dealer (that doesn’t sound good either). Anyway, the stuff looked like… well… dust… or even sand maybe, with a few small stones mixed in. It really does look like scale ballast, but I had my doubts. It was so fine that I didn’t think it would last for even a single rainfall. I was wrong. After shoveling and packing it into the heavier “working” ballast earlier this week, we indeed did have some pretty heavy rainfall and, low and behold, it held. For how long? I’m not sure. As Shawn reminds me winter will eventually get here, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see how well it holds up over the entire season. Until then, here’s an action shot for all you ballast lovers out there (and you know who you are)…

-Kevin.

i like it. most layouts do show ballast, that is as big as childheads. but this looks believable.

Mr Dude, in the picture is she giving a thumbs up or “shooting” you with a finger gun for letting hippy looking guy molest eeerr hug her?

Looking good. Yes, I prefer a more to scale looking ballast. It will wash away over time, but not as quickly as you thought. Unless of course you get a “100 year storm”. We get those about every 3 or 4 years now. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Looks good. I use the same drugs, I mean stone dust. We must use the same dealer… It looks much better then the larger stone I see. It will last so dont worry about it not. Every spring put a new coat of ballast down or just add where it washed away. The spots where it might wash out, add a retaining wall. I have not had to replace ballast yet from washouts. The stuff will get harder (shut up Rooster) over time.

The area along the double track mainline, between the big black bridge and the lower line tunnel entrance had a real steep slope that pretty much deemed it useless (sort of like a screen door on a submarine).

That is, until this past weekend…

With the addition of this retaining wall, the area between the double track mainline and the new wall is now prime real estate!

Here on the Iron Island, we’re building walls, not bridges (of course, to be fair, I did actually build the big black bridge as well).

I’m “-Kevin.” and I approve this message.

Were are the Trains?

They’re running. Just not today… it’s raining. I have been running some small engines while I work. Usually, my trusty garage sale Aristo 0-4-0. Having something running around making noise while I work is awesome. I know that the stock sound system in the Aristo 0-4-0 has taken a lot of criticism over the years (not from me), but I look forward to hearing it chugging along while I dig dirt and lay retaining wall.

I know, but my mom and the neighbor kid don’t understand it.
