Large Scale Central

Raritan River #22 0-6-0

I got a really good price (that’s what I keep telling my wife) on an AMS 0-6-0 Electric Lettered Burlington. I have never owned something so nice that cost slightly less than a car!

The Raritan River Rail Road was a shortline in Central New Jersey that ran steam until 1954. I have modeled 2 of their diesels in G Scale, but never thought I could do one of their steam engines.

Here are some teaser pictures as I get started:

I used Stan’s method of decal/paint removal with low pressure baking soda and ordered Gold decals from him. You can see where I removed a little too much down to the brass.

More to follow.

Lou

Looks good Lou. How does the little locomotive run?

Run?

I got so excited about the repaint that I have not even put it on the test track. Outside - fugedaboutit.

Now you have got me curious. I will have to put it on test track this weekend.

test track - def: lay down a piece of track on the basement floor and hook up wires

Well, Chuck it runs fine. Runs even better if you take the foam thingies out from the tender wheels.

I may start a thread in Problem Solving because I put all of my engines on a test track, and this is the only one that ran in the opposite direction. Good for avoiding collisions, but drives the Yard Master nuts!

Does it have an LS/NMRA switch like the bachmann engines?

Hmm. I’ll have to look, but I don’t recall that in the instructions.

I’m not going to bore you with pictures of dry paint, but here is one of the Tender with flat black to cover the brass that was showing. Now Stan suggests to cover with gloss, because decals do not adhere well to flat finishes.

Here is a picture of the actual engine in South Amboy, year unknown.

You work slower than I do Lou, any progress?

Gimme a break! I was outside in 95 degrees trying to fix our pool from Hurricane Sandy.

Besides, quality takes time. I don’t want to rush and make mistakes.

I plan to decal tomorrow when my wife is gone.

Lou, I think he was being sarcastic.

Six days from RTR, painted engine to primed/painted and ready for new decals, thats pretty good in my book.

Thanks.

That’s OK. I know Hollywood now. I can actually remember his name when I see him.

And he’s one of those guys that don’t allow for paint dryin’ time. I do a lot of that waitin’ stuff!

Paint needs time to dry ?

Obviously he must be using that water-based stuff in stead of dry toner-based, lol.

I used shake the can to put flat black. Then shake the can gloss poly-unpronounceable. I am going to use chalks to dirty black the firebox and the silver whatchamacallit section on the front. Then A coat of dull.

The Raritan River believed in BLACK. Although I don’t understand why they used gold lettering and striped the tenders and cabs!

Oh that poor engine. Lou, before you dirty it up, send it over to the FCR.

Our shop forces are required to wash every engine down each night as part of a preventative maintenance program. She would look so much better with the FCR New Age paint scheme and a shiny gloss boiler jacket

You got to have some dirt to show that it is used other wise folks will think it’s a shelf queen. Later RJD

Well… where do you think they sit proud and preening their staybolts between runs?

Progress Report: (Hollywood)

Been working on our above ground pool. When Sandy hit, the river out back came up almost into the 4 foot pool. We had to repair the liner, and pop the sides back into the supports - 2 days worth. Then found out the pump motor was completely rusted into one piece! Tonight the pool is running! Yea!

What I really wanted to progress was the engine. Got the boiler plate done. Tried to do the number boards with dry transfers - didn’t work. Has a small lip, so I couldn’t get the numbers close enough to adhere cleanly. So tonight I cleaned out that, and did decals. I also have one half of the gold striping around the cab number done. I am not rushing that part so I @#*% it up. So that much is drying.

We have a wet forecast for part of the weekend, so that should be good decaling weather.

Patience, patience, patience.

Lou

Blame me for Hollywood’s patience !
