Rail Days is April 26,27 at the North Carolina Transportation Museum. The Museum is located at the old Southern Railways repair shop in Spencer,NC.
I would encourage a visit here at anytime, not just Rail Days. [url]http://www.nctrans.org/index.php

Ralph " be there or be square " as the old saying goes so I’ll be there! It’s one of my favorite places .
Ed
I’ll be there for sure. It is such a great place. Here is the turntable and roundhouse. Ralph

Heyyyyyyyyy, if anyone has a couple spare hours, I could really use some good measurements of ETWNC Combine #15 that is allegedly at Spencer.
Bob McCown said:I will look for it while I am there. Some of their rolling stock is in non-public areas. Rail Days would probably not be a good time for measurements. Ralph

Bob,
You might ask Gaetan about that. The combine is in a non-public area, though it’s destined to end up in the developing Backshop building at some point. When Gaetan and Nicole were here a couple of years ago, we got special permission and an escort to let us in for a look at it … It’s in a building in the back, and not in particularly great condition now, though when we were there, someone had done a lot of work on the 3’ gauge trucks, while the car sat on a pair of borrowed standard gauge ones. Gaetan took about a zillion photos, and measured every inch of the car, and has it on CD … was all part of the now questionably fated Azalea project… but if you want that, and a bunch of other tweetsie stuff we did that week, I bet Gaetan would help you.

Hey, does anyone know if they have ANY steam back yet? I know 604 was in pieces last time I saw (though in a recent George Clooney spot on TV, it looked like they were pushing it around for show) and the Shay has been mysteriously out for awhile… you’d think that living here, I’d know more.

The Shay was also being rebuilt when I was there last summer. They are bringing in an 0-4-0 built in 1930 for Rail Days.
Ralph
From the web-site:The Shay is currently out of operation. It needs new flues and boiler work, and is in line for an overhaul after the Spencer #604 is restored and returns at the Buffalo Creek a& Gauley #4.
Ralph
That’s probably the Flagg Coal 0-4-0. It gets around … spent a few days at Bonsal recently.
Buffalo Creek and Gauley #4? That’s a new one on me.
I was talking to one of the guys rebuilding the shay last Rail days .He said that it would take at least 2 years to rebuild it that it was in worse shape than they had frist thought. I live in Thomasville if any one cares ro know.

Yes, it is the Flagg Coal that will be there.
Buffalo Creek and Gauley #4 is the original name and number of the Spencer 604. It will be sporting it upon return.

You should have a fair number of trains to watch around Thomasville.
Ralph
We need to get together for a scenery night… the Slate Creek is in Rural Hall!
Matthew (OV) said:Sounds like a winner to me. Maybe several of us can get together at Spencer and plan something. Ralph
