Large Scale Central

"New" Loop & Hook, Care and Preservation Society

a new note by Email, from someone in Lower Joisey; suggests that he won’t post here, because he might be considered a snob, because he only uses LGB Loop & Hooks… I assured him I would not even breath his name (What is it with these guys…this one is from Lower Joisey, and another one from Texas)

By return email. I assured him that there is a tender place for all makes of L&H couplers in this grand, caring Society.

…and that his posting here on LSC would not in any way prevent him from enjoying holy water of his own choice, but I did suggest moderation.

BTW…it is duly noted, that:

By carefully cutting a “Loop”, from a pair of L&H couplers, in a certain manner, the modified part, carefully mounted in the correct orientation, can serve as a cup hook, for your well used coffee, or holy water mug, close to your work bench. The old metal ones are best, because they might bend, but won’t break…

Sorry I prefer Hook and Loop couplers over the Loop and Hook couplers. i find that they are more reliable and require less maintenance…

I’m not posting here, much, anymore, but…I must report that my dedication to converting back to Loop & Hooks has been changed to Hook & Loops, thanks to my friend Bart.

Three more pieces of rolling stock have been converted back. Two to Loop & Hooks, and one to Hook & Loops. Gradually the conversions will be dedicated to Hook & Loops.

There is one tank car that is in the shop, dedicated to “Septic Service Only”…it is on the “RIP TRACK” waiting to be converted back to Hook & Loops. It already had been converted from the upstart, Aristo knuckles to Kadee #1’s…but now it is going that one step farther, to Hook & Loops…the true coupler for Large Scale Model Railroading.

The coupler of choice, for Branch Railroadians, the World over.

Fr.Fred

For Halloween I dressed up as a H&L coupler.

Terry

That’s a really good idea Terr. Wish I had thought of it. There’s always next year.

For those of you that think it strange to “dress” as an inanimate object; my niece was a mailbox this year!

Test run Saturday of the two trains equipped with H&L’s.
Only failure was the Botch Version 4 Circus 4-6-0. Took some internal wire re-routing (why did they thing wedging the power wires between the chuff contacts was a god idea I will never know), repairing one pickup…good old PRCQC…spring hung up in bore…reamed the bore, all works…and a full lube…Sunday ran (qualified) fine.

Did you take the pole?

(qualified) meaning how well does one expect a Version 4 ten wheeler to actually run, anyway?

Calm down, Dave my friend…

On this thread, we only discuss the preservation of the Hook & Loop couplers, or in some peoples’ mind; Loop & Hook couplers…not the status of the drives of some manufacturers’ locomotive.

Be nice Dave…Loop and Hooks/Hooks and loops are the topic…

If we start polluting the topic; Bob will jump in and delete yours and my posting…and then we will become nothing more than a clone of another web page found elsewhere…

Lets preserve this topic…THE TOPIC IS:

The Care and Preservation of Loop & Hook Couplers, and a group/society, that supports it…as simple as that…no politics…no reason for being shut down by the “Holy Moderator” on high…

Fr.Fred

UPDATE…

4 more cars on the IPP&W have been converted from Kadee #1 couplers, to Loop & Hooks…then on the second shift, converted to Hook & Loops. (Bart; are you happy with that…?..!!)

Fr.Fred

…egads…I converted 6 cars, not just 4…!!

Fr.Fred…deep into holy water haven…

Pictures Fred . . . got to see how well ya did.

I prefer the Aristo brand meself.

As the Yuletide season approaches, St. Nicolas, Father Christmas et al, it is time to remind H+L and L+H coupler aficionados that annual subscriptions will soon be due. As no formal committee exists subs have not, as yet, had any value set. My suggestion might be that subs, in the form of the aforesaid couplers, be sent to an address yet to be provided.

One suggested address might be in the Nepean district of Ottawa.

However, the non-exixtent committee are always open to any suggestions.

I thought loop and hooks were the new upside down ones found on Bachmann LIL haulers? Real Mens toys come with and run more reliably with Hook and Loops.

That belt Hook from Garratt is great. That could be the start of a new belt buckle business.

Ahhh, Yes…great for cup holders, and belt hooks…BUT…they still prove themselves daily as the couplers of choice for LS model railroads.

I;ve be contacted by a closet 1:20.3 modeller that wants to know how to body mount a good L&H/H&L coupler to a new B’mman car, and an Acucraft short caboose…any advice is welcome…I’m only into the 1:25.3 stuff…

I just received a note from a fellw in Alberta…he is using two LGB L&H/H&L to hang a frozen turkey in his walk in freezer. He said one would have been strong enough…but…

I plan to decorate the tree with them this year as well.

Well I have a ton of them to dispose of. My Christmas train however will retain the H&L . BTW I do still have some of the Tyco H&L metal ones left. Later RJD

Ah, RJ. NOT TYCO. Never. Tyco was horn hook…different thing entirely.
MANTUA used MANTUA couplers.
Brass (usually…except I have some nickle plated), the most popular and widely used couplers in Half Zero before Kadee.
Ever see the ones for passenger cars?
About twice as wide a loop.
I have been converting all my old Half Zero stuff to MANTUAs because…it really jacks the blood pressure of nmra types.
Plus, they are period correct…and a lot of my stuff is embossed cardstock, factory painted sides.
I do have enough Roundhouse and DeVore couplers to do a full string of Varney metal high cars…just because.
