Question...on "Ratings...."

There is certainly potential to abuse the “ratings”.
Jon has over 10,000 posts.
If I was bored, I could go back to every post and ding him over 10,000 times Laughing

And I’d notice in the admin panel and take appropriate action.

Also note that when you give someone a reputation point, or thank them, they get a notification.

But the thing with reputation, is that it is kind of subjective. An obvious post in bad taste is one thing, but other posts could be interpreted differently by different people. One member got in a snit, when I suggested what others had suggested, in the same thread. I re-explained my point and that member, answered that he had misunderstood my post.

I hope that folks are able to settle conflicts between themselves, and not have to whine to Bob. He is not your nanny.

Grow a pair, put on your big boy pants, and use the back channel messaging to resolve misunderstandings, that is why it is there. And don’t hide behind “Blocked,” so that can’t happen. You know who you are.

Hey Ralph,

Go ahead and try to do that and we’ll see you in about a year! WinkCool

And I agree with what you said about policing. Part of the charm of this place is the thread drift and good natured ribbing. When Rooster tells Shawn to “put on your big boy pants” it isn’t an insult to those that know the history of that friendship. Someone coming in fresh may get the wrong idea, but they need to be enlightened rather tnen shutting down the ribbing remarks just because someone might not understand.

It took some back channel “get to know you,” for me to understand Rooster. But it was back channel, not crying to … Still not sure that I fully understand…

Welcome to the club…

The mileage may vary and certain preferences are more or less the same as on a telephone system with call display. Certain calls (numbers) get blocked, others get ignored and the ones that get answered or replied to a bit later are the ones that count. At least that’s how it works with my phone number. WinkLaughing

@Steve - I have been frequenting the Chat Room with Rooz and several others for quite some time now, and there are still days I have no idea where Rooster is coming from. But most of us that have, as I have, invested the time to learn the players soon realize that the friendship between the individual players in that banter are good friends and mean no harm. That is part of the reason I lurked here for about a year before I joined and started posting. It’s called acclimating ones self to ones surroundings. Those who choose make assumptions with out due diligence are the ones who usually go elsewhere in frustration. As far as back channeling as a solution to individual dsputes, it will most likely have mixed results. There are those here whose PM has been disabled as a result of events either here or on other fora where that feature was abused and disabling it was the simplest resolution. If Bob sees that as the best solution, I am sure he has the ability to disable the ‘disable’ feature.

My questions regarding the use of the Thank/Add Reputation/Report features are: If one gives a Thank or a Reputation point, is it for that specific post, or for the thread as a whole? Do I interpret the usage correctly - Thank would be used for say a thread/post where the poster has provided specific information requested? …Add Reputation used for say, plus Reputation for a great thread/post like Ray’s Brick Building, and a negative (not to open a wound but most recent event) where John L made his comments? These sound like the logical path to me, but then…

I can see some learning curve here if we really would like to use this system to it’s best advantage for all. I think at some point in time, every one of the active posters here will receive their share of the ‘high fives’, as they should. It would be a wonderful thing if there were never any negative points ushered up, but I am sure that some will be.

Yes. Both “thanks” and “reputation” are per-post. “Thanks for this nifty information, and by the way, here’s a point of LSC Karma”. The thanks you see below the post. Reputation accumulates under your profile pic.

Bob, you made some statements recently where you explicitly stated your desires on people taking steps to resolving issues, and the use of the report function.

Could you add these to your “be nice” sticky or another place? … it seems that not everyone has remembered the guidelines you have set down, earlier and recently. And by referring people there when they get out of line, it should deflect the “forum police” accusations, or at least some. SmileI’m sure someone will get upset being referred there to ha ha!

I’m glad someone agrees with me.
It’s easy enough to steer a thread back on topic without pointing out the “offender” and making a big deal about nothing.

Amen. I don’t think I’ve ever started a post that didn’t wander off for a bit at some point. I liken it to a conversation you might have with 5 or 6 people. I might start talking about one thing, but that reminds somebody else about something else. So, we talk about something else for awhile. If I want to keep a focus on my topic, I need to steer it back.

Having said that, the real danger is when that something else that is talked about deserves a separate topic, just because it’s so valuable and would be great to find later.

I’m not sure what the real answer is as forums are quite different as they stay around a lot longer than the typical conversation.Smile

Good idea, Greg. Thanks

“…I’d like a “no thanks” button for posts that are unhelpful, discourteous, and just plain stupid…”

On even a media site (primarily aliases) that has similiar ‘likes’ button I sometimes think for some comments there is need for ‘no thanks’ button.

Here though the best action is, don’t comment !! And “Report”, if abusive !

imho

Bob, I think the thanks and reputation are single global ratings… I’ve bounced around a bit between threads, and my “ratings” are the same on every thread… see what you think…

Ah, maybe I misunderstood what Bob was asking. Yes, your “thanks” and “reputation” scores follow you around, but you can only earn one of each per post

Doug, I think a “no thanks” button could start the stuff we want to avoid. If someone makes a few hundred posts and NEVER gets a thanks, they should figure it out. Not that they will, some people are that dense.

And, lets face it, we all make posts that are off target, or just plain useless from time to time. I know I have. Do I need to be told, that at that moment, that I was brain dead?

I think it will be interesting how this plays out, and I was sort of joking about a “no thanks”… if someone is really being a jerk, I believe the lack of thanks like Bob says, and they are really consistently jerks, the negative reputation votes will actually work.

Of course almost any system can be abused, but it does give some more “breadth” to feedback. Also remember that people can be notified who gave them thanks and who gave them reputation either positive or negative, so these “votes” are not anonymous.

I’m pretty enthused…
