Question...on "Ratings...."

In the ratings under the contributor’s name…should one of those be “Spanked” instead of thanked…!!..?

…or maybe “Spanked” should be added as an incentive to behave better in the future, although, spanking

in some minds is classed as abuse…egads…some days

no-mater what cure you think of for a problem; it either hurts or insults someone’s feelings…even when

trying to be constructive, a person just can’t win…!!!

My questions are on the same topic asked by Fred.
Do the numbers represent infractions, accolades, or?
Simply, what do they represent?
I am at a zero and yet consider myself as courteous in both inquiry and responses.
At this point I yield to those who know.
Thanks,
Wendell

These are forum member created ratings.
If you look above another members post, you’ll see the Thank, Reputation and Report icons.
You’re at zero, because this is all new.
Ralph

Yup. I just Thanked Fr. Fred and added to his positive reputation.

The buttons to do this are above each post.

I’d like a “no thanks” button for posts that are unhelpful, discourteous, and just plain stupid…

I guess that’s why I don’t do farcebook, there’s no “don’t like” button Smile

Oh well, something fun to click…

Greg, my guess is that the report option maybe the negative rating, but that is only a guess.

Need an button that has a guy with an L on his forehead. . . oh wait maybe I don’t want that available to people.

Report is as it has always been, report a post to the moderator…

The thanks and reputation buttons are reported below your avatar… notice the reputation line has 2 entries, one for adding (positive) reputation, and the right hand one is for getting a negative vote on reputation…

This will be interesting, as my “foes” start voting… Cool

The “Add Reputation” icon can also be used to reduce a members reputation by one point.
I sure hope people don’t misuse the “Report” button.
Bob doesn’t need his inbox blowing up.
Ralph

I believe it would be VERY wise to follow Bob’s last few posts as closely as possible. Work it out yourselves, forums self-police, be adults.

This should also halt people accusing others of being the forum police, since Bob has clearly said he would really like the forums to be self-policing.

Yes, the report button should only be a last resort, and really, when do you REALLY need this? Spammers, and people using really foul (sorry rooster) language maybe, so those posts can actually be deleted.

Greg

Yeah well, it will be interesting.Innocent BTW did you notice that there’s a valuation for the threads, too? I guess that will be averaged after each valuation, similar to the star ratings in consumer reviews. Undecided

Ah, thanks, Ralph - it should probably be just labeled reputation or change reputation.

I take it as “police” yourself.
After all, if you step in to “police” me, that’s a confrontation that can blow up.
I think if he doesn’t want a few moderators, he certainly doesn’t want everyone acting as moderators.
His own words, “don’t engage”.
Ralph

Ralph,

You hit the nail on the head. Police yourself is what he means. CoolI also think members should “lay off” the Reputation button!

Self-policing / self-moderating can be done member to member if it is done with decorum. It’s probably best done by back channel. For example; I could send a PM to Ralph referencing a post saying something like ‘it reads a little harsher than I think you intended. Maybe it would be a good idea if you go back and revise it.’

I really hate the PC movement; but you can speak your mind without being rude if you try.

On the reputation - I see that as a Like / Dislike rating on a particular post. It’s more personal in nature than on Facebook. The idea Bob mentioned was that over time new people will be able to use reputation combined with the other ratings to determine if a poster is someone they should read or ignore. Those of us that have been here a while already know those ratings in our head.

When someone clicks on reputation and makes a choice it goes to the publicly viewable numbers; good on the left, bad on the right but it doesn’t show on the post like Thanks do. It does go to your notifications telling you who did it if you have that option turned on.

When I found my signature missing I viewed one of my last weeks post and cut and pasted it: as far as I know it is now there. This post will confirm of course. Now as far a ‘reputation’ total is concerned I have to say that my only concern is that my reputation in Bob’s book is fine; that seems to me to be all that matters. Laughing

Egads, as you say Fr. Fred. If my wife finds that I have been spanking people she would assume - quite incorrectly of course - that I have a girl friend or two! aaaaargh!

I think “back channel” messages when someone gets a little nasty would be appropriate.

What I really don’t want to see is the “Forum Police” chiming in on a thread every time someone does a little good natured “ball busting” or if a thread “drifts” a bit.
Threads will drift off course. They usually come back on topic without any outside help Wink

Thats what Im hoping it can be used for. If youre going through a forum, and someone has a high ratio of good to bad, and a lot of ‘thanks’, you can assume he knows his stuff. If the ratio is more bad than good, you can assume that the rest of the site thinks he’s a tool and can read what is posted with that in mind.

YMMV, of course.

There is certainly potential to abuse the “ratings”.
Jon has over 10,000 posts.
If I was bored, I could go back to every post and ding him over 10,000 times Laughing
