Propeller Driven Train

Hi Everyone, I’ve decided to build a prop driven passenger car. It’s going to be bigger than any I’ve seen so far. I’ve been lurking for awhile and got some great ideas from Tim Brien’s postings. I’ll be copying some of his ideas for the front of the coach. (I hope you don’t mind, Tim). Pic’s so far Car Body Overhead Front

Cool project, looks really good so far!

Doug,
good start. I am pleased that my postings have inspired you as that was/is the intent of my Bachmann posts to encourage people to step outside the square and see the bodies as more than just coaches or combines, but as great kitbash fodder. Those bodies are so versatile.

Hi Doug,
Welcome.
Looks like you have an interesting project underway.
Ralph

new problem, the contra-rotating propeller system and required electronics are going to be too much.

I still want contra-rotating propellers… ne1 have any ideas?

Dear Doug,

Welcome.

Too much as in too expensive?

Cannibalize a toy RC helicopter with counter rotating props (for show only). Use motor driven trucks do the real work.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Doug;
Welcome.
HUMMMMM, Interesting idea.
Interesting to see what unfolds from this project.
Good luck.
David

Very cool idea and good looking progress so far.

Not being a airplane person, what is the advantage of counter-rotation; Balance? I remember that some gf the late prop engine fighters used them.

Jon: From an airplane POV the advantages are no torque roll and almost twice the thrust with little weight penalties (2 props 1 engine). I’m not a R/C plane guy, I have no depth perception, so this is my chance to have contra-rotating propellers, which I think are very cool. Joe: Yea to much money. the motor and propellers are reasonable, but the 2x speed controllers for the brushless motors are expensive. The power truck is a possibility I’m looking into, but it’s a compromise and I’d like to figure this out. Question for all: Brushless motors have 3 leads. Can they be converted to 2 leads (±)? there is another way around the Contra-rotating prop issue I’m looking at:

This or something similar…

Welcome Doug…neat build keep us posted

Honestly I sdo not believe that it is a double the power fo teh amount of thrust with Contra rotating blades. Friction losses in the gears and or belts & bearings in the shafts would negate most gains in dual thrust. My suggestion would be to stuff a “traditional” motor and propeller in the beast and test it.

Chas

I’m no motor expert but I believe that brushless motors depend on electronics to do the switching from coil to coil that the commutator and brushes do in a normal brush type motor and therefore would not work on straight DC.

Update: the body is painted. The colors looked better together in my head, my have to repaint the lighter color or change the interior color. Steps will be black as well as the floors between the doors. Cargo doors will be the red color.

Chas: yeah…thats what I thought too. I was Just hoping for the “Sure! all you have to do is…” thread. I’m leaning more to the shaft in a shaft idea as posted in the previous drawings. need to spend some time at the hobby shop looking at the gears, bearings, brass rod and tubes, prop mounts, props… yada, yada, yada… BTW, is it possible to: post pictures side by side? change Font size/color/bold/underscore/etc…? Doug

I think the exterior colors look good.
Ralph

That’s looking good. If you are still having trouble sorting out the propulsion, you could always go jet powered.

Two surplus JP-49 jets salvaged from a B-36.

Doug,

Those colors look very good and period correct. I would be interested in what you want to change it to?

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments:

Ric, I would change the yellow color to a lighter, whiter color. It’s starting to grow on me though…

I am building a Ducted Fan Powered car. More to follow at a later time.

Does anyone have one of the LGB propeller driven cars that is broken/dismantled? I’d like to make an offer on the motor/prop/ring assy’s/ the parts in the black box in this pic:

I like the colors.
