Power outage on the CR&TC RY Co

Two days ago, we had the “Wind Storm of the Century,” with sustained winds of 60 kts and gusts to 100 kts at the Deer Park Aerodrome, just a scant few miles away. We lost several shingles on the roof, and a tree came down, close by the chicken coop. My lovely bride was inside said coop when the tree fell, oblivious to everything. I, on the other hand, was just walking up to the coop, to retrieve her, and drag her back to the house, mad dogs and English women, you know, and I witnessed the whole thing. Now, a tree almost falling on my lovely bride is bad enough, but the damn tree fell on the mainline of the CR & TC, displacing the track, probably bending it, too. Even stainless steel won’t stand up to a 100 ft tall Ponderosa Pine.

To make matters worse, electrical power is out, here at the Feather Creek Ranch, and the power company doesn’t think they can hook us back up for 3 - 5 days. Our main source of heat is wood, and we have lots of camping gear, so this is just an inconvenience.

As soon as I get power back, I’ll post some photos. I’m posting this from my tablet, and haven’t figured out how to post pics from this contraption.

Man, I feel your pain. I think this winter for the western states is going to be tough. Already 14" of snow in northern NM with one storm. Destroyed my pagoda shelter, and beat me to putting protection on the RR buildings. Have to wait for a melt. Duck.

TOC said they had 60 mph winds at his place… woah! Last Sunday we had a lot of wind and threw the laptop, the high def tv, and the cigar ashtray to the ground.

Unbelievably, the glass patio table that had everything on it, and was tipped over by the wind getting the patio umbrella, did not break.

I was 30 seconds away from getting there and heard the loud crash.

$50 cigar ashtray destroyed, ashes everywhere.

$200 high def TV (on sale) had case popped open, snapped shut no breaks, no scratches, nothing… even though it went 3 feet down.

$2000 laptop was sitting on the ground 5 feet away… and NO SCREEN… heart attack!.. screen laying FACE DOWN on concrete patio 5 feet away… was sure it was smashed, picked it up… UNDAMAGED, unbelievable… got a can of spray air, blew out the cigar ashes, reassembled on barbecue counter…

I figure I have used up all my good luck for 3-6 months… am being extra care about everything, driving like an old lady, double checking everything…

Merry Christmas!

Greg

I was doubly fortunate. Not only did the tree miss the coop and my lovely bride, but I had just taken in all my buildings for winter maintenance. The tree fell where Leavenworth was.

Steve: Glade to hear that you are both OK. To bad about the Trackage, it maybe repairable with a rail bender! We were out for 18 hours and the #@^ generator would not start! Need to get it checked out.

Paul

That was not a fun storm for sure. My parents live in Spirit Lake and they are being told about the same time frame. They have m sisters generator and I took them 150 gallons of water for them and the animals. At work we had to run gensets to pump water to our outlying customers. At home we got lucky, only went out for about 90 seconds.

Power is back on. Black Cloud, the weather guesser, says another storm is inbound. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)Will keep the camping gear out for a few more days.

Just glad everything’s OK on the home front.

My power went out on the 17th (Tuesday) and just came back on a few minutes ago, today, Thursday. 2 1/2 days. House got down to the high 40’s F,

Most of the leaves on the ER&I RR blew up to Canada. And the big spruce in my front yard stayed upright, but it had me worried. They were toppling all over the neighborhood.

Here just a few miles south of Paul, in the booming town of Port Orchard, we lost power at school at 12:00 and had to finish the rest of the day in the dark. The junior high kids were quite mad when I told them it was going to be just another day of school. We live about 100’ south of the school property (1/2 mile via the roads) and our power went out at 13:30. No school on Thursday, but the power was back on at school by 11:00 on the 18th. We didn’t get power until 06:30 on the 19th…

Thankfully, We heat our house with a wood stove, on city water/sewer, so it wasn’t much of an inconvenience, as we used the stove to cook on, boil water for baths, etc. We might have been the only house in the neighborhood with the windows wide open trying to cool the house down from the 82 degrees inside. Time for me to start looking on Craigslist for people that have downed trees and they want them gone ASAP… Got to be ready for next year.

Somebody here in Deer Park had a 60 ft Blue Spruce come down. The wag put up a sign, “Free Christmas Tree, You Haul.” (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Did you take him up on his offer? (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

Nah, I’ve already got my tree picked out. I planted it about 10 years ago.

Glad to hear your ok Steve. I know how it feels. We had a few year stretch of some nasty weather and no power for long periods. Did you guys get any snow yet?

Buying a generator was the best invest when we had power issues. I spent 9 days with no power. After that I bought the generator and it came in handy. Although I don’t mind no power but the wife gets cranky without it lol… I just ran my live steamers all was good.

Does that mean I can come over and run trains? (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Steve,

Do you need any help out there?

At your own risk, Devon.

I haven’t inspected the right of way. The leaves may be gone, but the branches, twigs and pine cones littler the landscape.

Thanks for the offer. Joe’s coming over this afternoon and we’re going to make some firewood.

Are the chickens ok?

Yes, Rooster, the chickens are fine. Thanks for asking. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
