Postal issues?

I am wondering if there are industrial problems with USPS. I have one parcel that has taken seven days to go from Hyde Park, New York to Jersey City, NJ. Now I imagine it is just a short ferry ride across the Potomac.

Second parcel took no time to reach the Chicago processing centre, but since then has sat in limbo for ten days. Generally, a parcel will clear processing in minutes.

Was it shipped parcel post? If so… those items are last on the truck…kind of like standby for the airlines.

Tim the entire northeast is currently being clobbered by a nor’easter, that’s likely really slowed the mail down to say the least.

PANIC…why would anyone panic…it’s only the beginning of the first of several new “Ice Ages”…I’m thinking seriously of getting primed for HIBERNATION…!!

Going “Postal” ?

You usually are primed so when does the hibernation start? ;)

Lol thats the problem to go from Hyde Park NY to Jersey City NJ one has to cross the Hudson. The Potomac is in DC. They crossed the wrong river. Im sure the Nor easter we just got is causing some issues plus the weekend and maybe whoever sent the package out lied about when it really went out.

Yeah, and this huge pile of crappy weather came up here from the 'States - there’s a switch. I guess for them it’s payback time! :o

USPS is a union shop. Need I say more?

You're right! Those non-union parcel companies would have backed the truck over it, thrown it over the wrong fence, left it by the back door on top of the trash can, or put it on a truck to Buffalo.....

You DO know that when that evil “union” Post Office (Who’s financial difficulties are mostly caused by the idiots in Congress) goes away, that residential parcel delivery will become a thing of the past in all but the largest metropolises because there’s no money in it, right?

" financial difficulties are mostly caused by the idiots in Congress"

You just lost the argument. Like every progressive you need to blame someone else.

Stop.

Having worked at UPS there’s several reason this wouldn’t be the reason. I ASSUME USPS is the same. (usps contracts with ups to pull their trailers)

If a Parcel Post is the LAST thing put on a truck from a hub it would be the first off at the intended distribution location. Parcels are not sorted out at hubs by class until they reach the local hub. It’s at a local hub that the Priority stuff gets put on delivery trucks first. BtW 2day air within a state never is on an airplane

Most items shipped in New York are actually funneled to Syracuse (NY’s Hub) then shipped to New Jersey (Newark I believe)then to local hub/center

For most packages it depends on what hub(s) and how many hubs it takes to get to a destination.

and PENSIONS are whats killing usps which was screwed up by a republican that wants them to prepay pensions for years in advance when no other govt agency is required to do.

Both parcels were sent priority post. Correct the HUDSON, not the Potomac (I had George Washington on my mind, forgot about the Dutch). Normal transit time in the States is usually a max of four days prior international dispatch. I thought that there had to be a logical reason for the delay, considering the two processing centres are so far apart.

All depends on what hubs are involved, kinda funny when a person from Dunkirk NY sends a package to Buffalo, the truck from Dunkirk picks up packages from Buffalo if there’s overflow, but the truck goes to Syracuse to sort it, then it’s shipped back to Buffalo. I can guess the one going to NJ is bouncing hubs to get to a local and the one to Chicago(major hub) was a 1 transfer and made it there overnight/2days of drop off

First off Norman, it wasn’t an arguement, it was a discussion. The USPS is financially solvent on its own. But, I think it was in '05 or '06 congress passed laws to have the USPS pay about 5 Billion a year. With snail mail being their biggest money maker and the downfall thereof, due to email, it’s no wonder they are hurting and having to cut jobs and close offices. So, Mik is right.

But, everyone has different experiences with different carriers.
Around here if you want it broken and late use FedEx. If you want it usually on time and undamaged use UPS. On time and undamaged use USPS. But, like anything human beings run and operate, errors and mistakes are made.

I for one hope the idiots in Congress (of either persuasion) don’t kill off the postal service. Without the postal service, you’d have to pay several dollars just to send a letter or birthday card, pay a bill, etc. via UPS or FedEX. And good luck getting any service at all out in the boonies.

Email and “ecards” are ok for some things but there’s no substitute for getting a real letter or a real card, not to mention a real check or cash.

And I know a lot of folks pay bills online but I’d rather not. I also don’t like paying to print out a paper receipt for my records just because the company that’s billing me is too cheap to print and mail it themselves.

Then there’s the whole issue of “automatic” payments or deposits – I don’t trust 'em and never will.

I hope the PO sticks around for a long time too. They are trying to adapt and I think if Congress lets them, they will.

I for one, haven’t used a paper check in almost 2 years and before that they were few and far between. I am very careful with on-line banking; shred anything that has my account numbers on it, and use lots of diligence opening websites and email. Knock on my wooden head, I have not had a single issue.

To bring this back around to trains; when I sell and ship train items I really enjoy the convenience of USPS pre-payment via their website and free pick up at my door. I was a little annoyed recently though that you can no longer print a First Class parcel label/postage via the website.

Ray an e-card says I care enough not to bother looking up from my I-phone and going out to buy you a real birthday card.

I used to send H0/H0e stuff back an forth to a friend in the Netherlands back in the late 1990s/early 2000s. A small box would be under $10 or so in postal rates.

Recently, a quote for an item about the size of a 35mm film canister (a dated reference itself!) was about $35 with the new private contractor that took over parcel shipping in and out of NL.

…but the question should be: did it really cost $10 or $35?
