Large Scale Central

possible track plan

Yanno, taking the track out of the box gets it all dirty and dusty…

Just a thought… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thank you for your support Andy.

I had a friend who had books like that. No one was allowed to open the books, because it “stresses” the binding. If you don’t open them, you cant read them. In my mind, if I am not allowed to use something, then its just another decoration.

If you like how it looks on the ground in sections then just hook it together with whatever you got and run a train. Its temporary you come back later and do all the soldering and leveling and figitating.

For the record I am a repeat offender of the “What were you thinking” club.

I did that, supported the track with mulch, got it sort of level, and then pulled the mulch out of a 6" section, and poured ballast. Did this bit by bit and it came out very well, and I got to run a train right away.

Greg

yeah , Boomer I got to get the railbender out and start making it look like a train can run on it. I will worry about prper roadbase after I get a actual route nailed down

Pete, bush in picture number 2 might be a tight fit to get a long car behind. It may have to be trimmed back a good bit, moved or removed. Large scale takes up more room that one would think in curves. Like Randy said, make sure you have 8" to 10" clearance to get through.

Pete

In this section I wound get rid of the s curve, and got straight ( continue the border stones parallel to the house ) into a nice sweep to the right ( will be easier to mow) also giving you more area for items.

Personally, I’d try and keep from making everything ““Squarish””… What I would do, is add another curve section at the top, against the house, to make that whole curve just over 1/4 curve… This should angle the track away from the house and head towards the direction of the curve at the bottom right of the picture that goes around the post & porch… It would give a little smoother track flow and not be squarish to the house… It would require giving up a little more grass area…

Everyone seems scared of S-curves, but they are always seen on 1:1 railroads… I think they give the railroad some definition and character… Am not sure how long a train Pete is planning on running, but the closeness and tightness of the S-curve would basically be dictated by train and car length… Of course, other considerations would be body mount, or truck mounted couplers and where to S-curve is located in conjunction with operations…

Just my 2-cents worth… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Andy I am not scared of S curves, but they need to be built properly to not cause issues. I had 2 on my railroad. The one that caused issues has been removed. The other has been in service for 14 years and I have no plans to change it. Nor do I have the space to change it.

There is nothing to fear from S-Curves, as long as there is sufficient tangent between each curve.

They really do add visual interest to your layout.

How long is sufficient, you ask? For our purposes, the length of your longest piece of rolling stock will suffice.

Trinidad Hill, near Crescent Bar, Washington.

Steve yes, that is a good rule of thumb.

Ron, I know that area is the tightest area on the layout, I will get track about where I want and roll some cars through, problem being the biggest things I have so far are my GP38-2 and a 50’ USA Boxcar, so Running them through that area will tell me how much clearance I have, right now i am NOY planning on double stack container cars or those great looking USA auto carriers, which I think are about the longest ones available, and 70-80s diesel so MAYBE some SD40’s .

Andy I really like the interesting look of a 20-30 car train rolling on s curves. Who am I kidding , I have 5 cars, anyway, I will play around with these ideas and maybe this weekend , if I can bear the temps, I will try to actually bend up some track and secure it together. If I have huge success I will post a video, if I feel up to attempting that endeavor .

Well I braved the heat the other day and tried to actually bend and place some track on the ground to see what things look like. After a couple of hours of messing around I had about 30ft of track set , so I got my transformer , clipped wires to the track, then got my locomotive and boxcar, set it on the track and it moved… about 5ft then stopped. The track was in a shallow “V” ,and the front plow on stopped it. so I propped it up and away it went, I know the track need leveling side to side, but didnt realize it was that bad, after 10 ft, the boxcar fell off, how the locomotive stayed in is a mystery, propped that piece up, trimmed a bush a little and made it to the far side. Steep hill and other little issues , plus fading light made me stop. They yard is a lot more unlevel than I imagined. Some dirt will have to be brought in and some retaining walls will need to be constructed before any more attempts are made.

Funny

And I was going to do it the hard way with a four foot level. But now that I think about it I already have an app on my phone that has all sorts of leveling gizmos that is pretty dang accurate, I use it a lot, and it does percent grade. I hate when my smart phone is smarter than me.

My phone has a hinge so I can maintain my superiority!

Well sorta, there’s stuff on it I don’t use.
