Possible new kit

Hi folks Bruce and I were wowed by Ric Goldings’ new boxcab.

So much so, that we started plotting how to have one of our own. We’re pondering a craftsman style kit, similar to the EBT boxcars I did a few years ago. I’d supply the major parts of the body, and a complete list of parts you’d need. You’d supply the power truck (RS-3, etc, we’re thinking different ones will fit) and purchase the detail parts. Is there enough interest for me to go ahead and see about designing the parts and having them cut out? I’m pondering an initial run of 10-20. Cost would be in the $40-50 range, I would think. Opinions?

(unless you want to build me one:-)

Some more information. This is one if the power trucks we’re thinking about. They’re around $72 a piece.

Other trucks of similar size (up to about 8" long, actually) will work, so start digging in your parts box.

I just showed a picture of this switcher to my wife and she supports us getting one for the Lotta Rock Railroad. So Bob…sign me up for one!

Waffling the idea …

Bob, so the plastic would be cut to size, windows cut out and holes for various things is what you would get. THat was what the boxcars were like, as I recall. No windows/doors or other parts I assume.

Jerry your not allowed to buy this kit until you finish and post pictures of your shark!!!

That’s what we’re leaning toward. A clear acrylic box (so you dont have to cut out windows or doors), that assembles into the basic box, which would fit onto the motor truck. Some parts would require sandwiching two layers for thickness. We’d also have a complete parts list, and where to get the other detail bits as needed.

I would be interested in a kit if they are produced!

Hi Bob count me in…i assume we are talking 1:20.3 dimensions? Todd

Me and ig and the boys would like one as well, please.

Is it premature to ask if there will be a VOLUME control?
I can’t often hear my wife, or others, but I found myself steering away from the loco as it hurt!
Maybe particular frequencies??
I was told what the sound system was, but I’ve since forgotten.

I, too, liked the turn over cranking before the engine started as Ken said.
Part of the allure to the unit.

If my ‘slippage’ is not interfering with memory this morning, I believe Ric said that it was a Phoenix Sound System in that ‘box!’

A Volume control should be easy with this project and all the info we picked up during the Invasion!

Bob

Depends on the price. OTOH a group build/challenge could be fun

Count me in Bob. My railroad crew wants one! I’ll have to figure out how to put Kadee couplers on it!
I have a 1:24 motor block that may fit it. I wondered what I’d use it for!

Bob,

Absolutely, I want two.

The sound is the Phoenix P-8 with the Goose sound gas engine. It has volume control hidden inside. It was set for the outside running and to make sure Fred could hear it. Fred is a big fan of sound systems.

Volume has already been turned back down.

Exactly the reason I wired my three RS-3's to each have a speaker and connect to the Cheesy Sound Car that had two more at the time. 5 Speakers blasting Alco rhythms on the IPP&W for Fred's enjoyment. Somewhere there's a picture :)

Five speakers! Who are you trying to wake up?

Friar Fred. He's a tad hard of hearing :)

The man sometimes just does not realize all the trouble we go through for him.
