Large Scale Central

Please vote for your favorites in the first LSC scratchbuild cha

The rules were simple. Build or bash whatever you wanted with what you had on hand or could scrounge for free, without spending more than $10 out of pocket on additional material… and do it in less than two weeks. The contestants did their parts. Now we are asking all of you to take part in the judging. Each of you may cast two votes. One vote for most creative design/use of materials. Second vote for best of show. Since I can’t figure out how to set up a poll, simply post your votes (as #1 and #2 with your selection) on this thread. Voting ends at Midnight Pacific on Friday the 22nd of January 2010. The entries for our contest: A. Baggage car

B. Pulpwood and block cars

C. Well

D. Shay

E. Goat

F. Work/Outfit Car

G. Log Cars

H. Ranger Station

Honorable mention: Still life with mystery meat?

Contestants are asked not to vote for themselves, nor to try to influence the outcome by threats of mayhem, collusion, or bribery. Don’t get me wrong, you can still mail me all the Jacksons, Grants and Franklins you want – but don’t expect me to actually change my votes… Note: edited post to clarify rules

My votes
#1 (use of materials/design) F
#2 (Best overall) B

Simple enough?

D. Bart’s Shay.

This is a hard one. Everyone did a great job. I can’t believe what you all did in two weeks and with stuff just lieing around. Hats off to everyone.

  1. #1 (use of materials/design) E

  2. #2 (Best overall) C

Like I said you all did a great job and this was realy hard.

I have to say I’m a little disappointed in the lack of “build” photos, as well as the “how to” information.
That being said…they all look great.
And every entry is hands down better than what I could have done in 2 weeks time.

Best use of materials: E…Mik and the Goat.
Best overall: G…the log cars.

Mik,
If we do this again…I’d suggest a little more structure to the rules. I’d like to see photo’s of the process,
starting with the materials used through the finish. Hard to choose when information is so limited on several of the
projects.
Need to find a sponsor for prizes, or collect a $5 entry fee that will go to the winner.
Plan and materials list to be submitted at the contest start.
A month to do the build would be nice…we don’t all have a obsessive, compulsive nature.
And a new contest every month, or maybe every quarter.
Maybe Bob can clue us in on setting up a “vote” on the forum.
Ralph

I applaude every one’s efforts. Maybe if everyone built exactly the same thing, I could judge who did a better job. It is all impressive work.

Hard to decide everyone did a great job

1 Best use of materials - H Goat
2 Overal -l H Tower

I dont usually show my build process because the lighting in my work area is terrible plus when I do a project it is usually last minute - all depends what the kids are doing at that moment.

I can’t vote.
The builders prolly shouldn’t vote.
Ralph,
I am going to build a few more, and I will take pics as I build. I usually get going and forget about the “how to” steps.
I should have done a better job on reporting.

I don’t think I’m qualified to vote because I couldn’t build anything from scratch if my life depended on it ----- yet. Give me a little more time at this stuff. I enjoy every minute I work on my layout, but have a loooooong way to go.
I really like the work car!

Nice work all…would love to know more about All Projects.

John, as long as we’re being gentlemen and not voting for ourselves, it doesn’t violate Robert’s Rules of Order… otherwise, yes, we’d end up like the Pirate Council.

Norm, if you’re a member/registered user since before midnite last night, and can see the pictures, you’re qualified.

Build logs? There are a couple who posted them. I intended to leave names off until the voting was finished, so you would have to vote project, not personality, but if it helps you choose

The whole thing went over really really well for a wild idea that just kind of jumped full grown out of a rum hangover on New Year’s Day. IMO, that was the truly great part of the ‘challenge’… nobody (not even me) knew it was coming. So EVERYTHING, including the contest rules was entirely ‘seat of the pants’. I’m not sure we could ever replicate that again.

That said, I would probably participate in a quarterly, or random date contest (monthly would probably get old fast, even for me)… but it would never be quite the same. Resisting the urge to purposely stockpile stuff and pre-plan would be truly hard… even for people who rarely plan what they are going to do the next day. Allowing for various levels of competency would clarify and confuse at the same time as well… You’d almost HAVE to have a ‘beginner’ category, and keep a few ‘intermediates’ from trying to cheat by downplaying their experience and competing against the new guys… Let me think on the idea a bit. Maybe talk to Bob… and see where it goes.

For a prize, I do have a thin softcover book on building freight cars… I’m just trying to think of/scrounge a second one. And if I can find a couple small gold trophies at the dollar store or Goodwill this afternoon… hehehe

Mik
I have absolutly no gripes about how you ran it. I thought the seat of your pants thing was what made it fun and isn’t that what the hobby is all about??? It was a kick to enter. Win lose or draw it was fun to see what people come up with. Thanks for organizing it. I do think the informality made it FUN.

We need to ask Bob if we can set up a Poll here for voting.

I haven’t had breakfast yet so I’m voting for I.

All really good projects. Very hard to vote. Somehow I missed the contest, I recently put a few “freebees” together. Oh well, next time i guess!

<John, as long as we’re being gentlemen and not voting for ourselves, it doesn’t violate Robert’s Rules of Order… otherwise, yes, we’d end up like the Pirate Council.>

OK. Sounds good.

#1 G
#2 F

  1. Miks Goat
  2. Baggage car

1 E
2 F

All very creative and well done, especially for the short deadline.

I love old time narrow gauge work cabooses.

  1. F
  2. F

So F is a sweep in my opinion.

Big John

I’ll go with

  1. A baggage car
  2. F work car

And yes this could be enjoyable once in a while. No need for prizes just the challange with a time limit, even take the limit off and whatever you build would be good. It’s more the push to build something that you wouldn’t normally do than anything else.
