Pickle Car

I have wanted to do a pickle car for quite a while. I liked John’s Canadian Pickle Car (which should have won the contest), but this is an American Pickle car. I have an O Gauge decal set for “The Harbauer Company Pickle Car”. Says either Boxcar Red or Black, we doing red, with white lettering. Finally found a car <$30.

I started with a Delton Coal Hopper. Three before pictures:

I removed the hopper guts and the side wheels:

I put the top piece back on so it looks like there might be 3 vats instead of the 4 that the decal sheet shows. I dunno, I might have to do some measurin’ or get a hammer. We’ll see.

I like pickles and pickle cars are a interesting car that I have also wanted to build.
I think you have a GREAT idea to start with the hopper car body.

Keep us posted.

Todd

Looks good so far, keep the pictures coming.

Chuck

Well, that’s different. Can’t wait to see the finished result…

Now thats an original thought!

Ummm Pickles!

Why not a sauerkraut car ? Everybody wants a pickle car ! Nice idea on car choice Lou, and your progress looks good. O scale decals, I’ll need to give them a look see.

Sauerkraut???
3 vats on the car why not ketchup, mustard and pickles?

Only 2 vats are required… yellow Mustard and Sweet relish…

Don’t forget Vienna Sausage!

Ya, them Vietnamese make good sausage!

Found my pix from 2013 ECLCTS. Here is John’s what he called a “Vat Car.”

Any votes for calling it a “Sauerkraut Car”? John?

I think John is of French extraction, not German.

Then maybe it could be “choucroute” Steve. I did read that with pork it is a New Years dish In Pennsylvania.

Lou, I have never bought any of those type Aristo/Delton cars so far But I may find one at a show. You gave me ideas.

I hadda look that’n up, Alan.

For Alan or anyone else interested, there is one reasonably priced on ebay. To me reasonable is ,$30.

And John is Canadian, eh?

I have determined that 4 vats will fit. On top of the picture you will see a recycled iced tea container from which I can cut 2 vats.

I will cover the outside with wooden coffee stirrers thusly:

I finally get to use this nifty balsa wood/ plastic cutter I got at Hobby Lobby.

It cuts through them in a jiffy. Much faster than the knife I was using.

Now if I can get the elves to cut these while I sleep, I will be ready to glue wood to vat, and then wrap with some kind of banding TBD.

Cool…

Dig in Lou and pics say 1,000 words!

Progress Report:

I have one vat done. I need to decide how to band the vats. I have some copper sheets that have adhesive back. I could cut that into narrow strips to use for bands.

To color, I used some furniture touchup markers I got at Christmas Tree Shops.
