Phil's Narrow Gauge.......

D&RGW MoW caboose will be winging its merry way in my direction any day now. I just caught Phil in a good mood, and persuaded him to part with the last one he had.

Now Phil’s products, of which he is rightly proud, need no trumpeting here on this forum, so I’ll only say that I sincerely hope that I can do it justice. As ever, our Stan will be making the decals, and he just told me that he’s been talking to Phil to get the dimensions just right.

As some of you know, I am a caboose freak [like many here, I’d guess], and I aim to build this as an article for the British ‘Garden Rail’ magazine - in pictographic form for those who have problems with bigger words

Phil himself notes that he does not pretend that his models are museum quality, but his customers seem to ignore that comment, and go right on making PNG models to a level of astounding realism that could rightly take their place at the head of any display of Fn3 rolling stock, yes, even in a museum.

I just hope that my effort turns out half as well as some I’ve seen, and I’ll be happy.

Best to all

Terry,

There’s a few of us on here who have had the pleasure of building one of his kits, so if you have a question about any phase of the construction, don’t be afraid to ask.

Thanks, Ken, they look pretty straight-forward to me, and I’ve already built a few from scratch. Just thought I’d like to do it right this time

Tac - they are straight forward, but make sure to read the instructions through before you even start. To me, Phil’s models have all the detail I need, plus they hold up very well outside.

To top it off, Phil is a very nice guy and very talented modeler as well. I met him once on a business trip and we had dinner together. He showed me some of the masters he uses for casting and they are truly impressive.

I was able to talk Phil into a custom caboose kit more than a few years back:

I have built a number of his kits, and they are quite enjoyable. That experience enabled me to venture into scratch building my own models. I owe a lot to Phil.

Boomer,

I am already throwing all my change in a jar for the trip. A week, plus travel, plus rent-a-wreck, plus eats, plus…plus…plus… the missus and I are budgeting in the 5K arena. Hmmmm what stuff can I sell on ebay…

Bob C.

I really wanted one of those MOW cabooses. Phil’s kits are really nice. He also does some great service work. I had him put bearings in my AMS trucks. They roll so much better.

Terry

I designed and built the prototype for the MOW caboose. Loosely based on the Sierra Railroad side door caboose. Phil shortened the length for the final production run, but basically kept to my design. I hope you enjoy the build, Terry.

John, that is gorgeous… Just gorgeous…

What a great job… Outstanding!!!

Ditto that! Very impressive work!

Very nice work. I love that caboose.

Terry

Wow, love the detail on that caboose.

John, I agree with the others. That is an outstanding caboose. Very impressive details. Great job.

John, I’d really appreciate a few more of those beautiful pics. You can email me at

Many thanks in advance.

Ken, I’ve sent you some pics of the centre-cupola Sheridan van that I built a few years back.

Best to all there, and anybody here as too.

Beautiful looking models, expertly constructed, detailed and painted.

This, as so often happens on this Forum, has got me considering an upgrade to a plain Aristo bobber in my fleet.

I was looking for a project - without having to add more stock to the pike - and this could be it. lol

Thanks, Ken, for posting my pics. Now I 'spose I’ll just have to dirty it up. I wonder if Ken Dunn [Sheridan Models] will ever get to see it? He must be well into his 80’s now, Phil notes.

Tac, I have one of his long cabooses (cabeese?) and love it. Yours looks great.

You are very kind to notice my poor efforts, Sir.

Thank you indeed.

Gadzookus, even the doors open…

Gots bunks, ladders, seats, writing tables, cupboards, stove, wash facilities, all kinds of stuff. The interior was extra to the kit, but I’m mighty glad I got it - even door hinges and handles…mind you, my latest efforts are a great improvement on this early attempt - so I’m told.

As I noted, I just hope that I can do justice to this model of Phil’s, soooooooooo, has anybody got any details of the [likely] interior layout? I can get all the door hardware from a local doll’s house store, as well as the pots and pans, faucets and stuff. The cuploa brake actuation valves will have to be made by paw, I guess.

BTW, John, I noted where Phil took the length out - between the side windows. I don’t bleeve it matters too much - apart from Alan down in Dorset and my Floridian pal Broos, I doubt there are more than a handful of people over here who have ever seen anything like it.

Best to all there
