Pete's 2021 Challenge Build Log

I can’t wait to see the Hippy in tie-dyed fatigues pulling up in his VW bus!

Pretty sure this is a picture of Pete from '74

His girlfriend maybe…

Pretty sure this is a picture of Pete from '74, sheesh Devon That’s a girl, although she looks a lot like the girl I dated for a month or so until her parents found out. I was more a muscle car guy, a friend did have a lace painted white and pink Jeep though!

Thats a girl??? I hadn’t noticed

WHOAAAaa… Thats a fake … Growing up in the 60’s in So. Calif. Been there, done that… BUT… that Combi, is in WAY, WAY, to good of shape for flower powering… Never saw one that wasn’t on it’s last leg, and at least several rust thru’s of the wheel wells…

true that Dave!

The brickwork is going to look great and will be worth the hassle of doing it.

Austin Powers might show up to that shagadelic hut.

I guess I better hurry up and paint the hut so everyone’s wild expectations don’t get too high on the finish on it. I may lose some style points but I don’t want it to rust to pieces.

But if you paint it, how will the Peace Train know where to stop? It might keep on rollin’!

@ Eric M. Two bonus Points for best groaner comment from the 60’s…

Well had some time in the shop yesterday, and as was bound to happen when working with sheet metal, tin cans and power tools, blood was sacrificed to the build spirits , while adding more bracing to the hut, my finger and a drill bit met each other , the drill bit won the round, there is now a very small #4 spot in the middle joint, but onward! As you can see I have really cleaned up my work space… NOT, I have done it 2 times since the Challenge started, and still every tool and bit of stuff migrates back to my work area in about 10 minutes time!

I made the rest of the block work, and filled in the corner, cut out one end of the can to move it back, most of the pictures I saw the entrance had a area that was inset and under the arch, I picked a random depth of about 3 scale feet, and using my cheap battery operated Harbor Freight whizz wheel and taking 2 charges to get it done cut out the end

there was a break in the rain for most afternoon so I took all the block work out and gave them a coat of textured paint to help the illusion of block, after that it was on to deciding how to reattach the end wall, I cut a piece of coroplast and it may be how I go, or I may try to reattach the metal end using some angle aluminum.

So while thinking on that I decided it needed a heater of some sort, and I could not come up with an easy way to make a small smokestack stick out and stay in place, so this one was modified with a fireplace, and more brick carving was needed, I don’t think my right fingers well ever be the same after pressing on that awl for all this time the last few days

Next up is painting the Hut, so despite someone who shall remain nameless on Facebook calling this idea Bull S&%T , with all the aluminum bracing it just looks too odd to me to have it stay its original colors. not sure what color it may be, a visit to the hardware store may be in the works, or rummage through the many cans I have to see what would work best

You can blame Devon for the fingers, Pete (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)The whole hut really looks good and I like the block and brick work you’ve done. You’re getting pretty good at it. I might have to send some panels over to you and let you “practice” some more. You know, they say practice makes perfect (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)I hate you are going to paint over the original can artwork, but I understand… Might consider taking some pictures with it out on the layout before you paint it just so we can all have that last memory (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Jeez everything is my fault. . .

And the nerve of some people using language like that on Facebook. Sorry Pete.

No, Devon just some things …hmmm, maybe a lot of things … well, most things … ahh hell, you’re right, everything (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Devon, you @@$, you knocked Dave’s build off the table, didn’t you!

Pete, the build is getting better looking with each update. Nice.

I did remember a cold chill in the air when I turned my back and went into the other room… ummmm…!

Yep I did it

Yep I did it

No Hippy Hut? Booo-hoo-hoo…(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif) In all seriousness, I agree. With the aluminum bracing, it goes from “hippy” to “urban chic,” like it would be a modern art museum in your railroads downtown instead of a surplus store. Looks great!
