I wanna play with Tac and IG!
I didn’t know it ever rained there.
Started welding up a frame this week. Yes, I know, Baker, Case, and Leader rollers didn’t have them… But if it makes the local inspectors less unhappy, it will be worth it – besides, it will probably save me a couple pages worth of stress calculations… First we set the rear parts to drill them for mounting holes, and to get the measurements for the rest. 3" channel is overkill, but it was free.

Not my best welding. But considering I hadn’t struck an arc in the last 5 years, and was using an AC buzz box - It’s serviceable…

Looks better with some grinding and paint. I think it will be black eventually.

Now a question: Can anyone translate the phrase “Not for Hire” into the Irish, or failing that, Welsh or Latin? thanks!
Iris - Gan Chun Hire
Welsh - Nid I’w Logi
Terry great photos, thanks for sharing. We have a hog production operations south of here about 9 miles that has done very well. They have restored 3 traction engines and have them in all the local parades. They keep them behind the politicians in the parades, just in case they have a chance to get one if they fall. Draws a big crowd. Always great sport.
Ric Golding said:Couple thoughts; Are they downwind from the pollies because the smell of pig sh-- and coal smoke help to clear the air? And obviously they aren't driving rollers? - those would probably just spin on the smeary false campaign promises.

My apologies, to anyone attempting to view the pictures.
Photobucket has decided to hold my photos for ran$om until the 22nd or until I $end them money. They claim I have exceeded my allotted monthly bandwidth, and expect me to pay to upgrade because of thi$. A$ u$ual, they have offered no proof to $upport their claim$. $ince I’m $ubjected to their paid adverti$ement$ every time I upload a picture, I feel I owe them nothing, but they $till de$ire more…
I’ll simply post new pics to Kim’s account. The others will be back in 5 days
Mik - Your pictures are popular Not surprised PB is doing this to you. I pay something like $6 a month for 3 domain names, unlimited bandwidth and tons of storage. Sometimes the servers are slow, but it’s a good deal.
Yesterday, a friend if a friend cut the yoke piece off for me. It took about 20 minutes with a power hacksaw… Since I no longer had an excuse to not make progress. I spent the evening mounting the front pedestal bearing brackets and some other bits that absolutely needed to be welded to the frame.

Today I finished up welding on the frame and got some help to heave the boiler into place.

After looking at it, I need to lower the pivot point on the front end a little over an inch - easy enough; Jack the frame up, pull the front rolls, cut the ears off the top of the roll bracket and drill a new pair of holes through the hollow bracket itself… then reinstall. If everything co-operates (yeah right!) it should take less than an hour

Steve Featherkile said:2" Flange bearings are kind of 'spensive, and the axle would interfere with the draft door..... Besides, lowering the cg a bit might might not hurt, either.

Being a new boy…WHY a roller…stick it on flanged wheels and rails
Crackingjob
Why a roller? Ask one of them old alpine guys why they climb mountains… Because it’s there. Because you can. Because so few other people do it.
Because I wanted one? – Actually I wanted to make a 20th Century at first, but the cost of a complete Mason/Stanley/Locomobile engine was prohibitive. A decent one goes for a bit over $2K. The half Mason ended up costing a bit less than $700… The front rolls I found at an estate auction for $25.
Putting it on rails would have required… well, rails… There are no local clubs. Running it at Portersville would require it be built to 15" gauge and only allow me to play with it 8 days a year. Trying to build a large track here would be asking for a lawsuit.
Besides, can you think of a cooler way to smash pop cans? lol
I wonder if those rollers could help smooth our washboard roads?
Great project!
Spent part of yesterday reworking the front roll mount and welding up an engine bracket.

It’s starting to look like a roller… maybe… if you squint? lol

Definitely thinking I need the larger flywheel, or maybe one even a bit bigger yet
(http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp52/steamnut1917/steam%20car%20engine/P9100006.jpg)
Still looking for gears that I can afford.
Hey Mik, Saw this building in Salisbury, NC. today. Thought you might enjoy it. Ralph

Is there anything more frustrating than knowing EXACTLY what you want to do, how to do it, where to get it… and not even having GAS MONEY to get there?.. Meanwhile, I put the steering chains on today.
And then I piped most of the steam line. Yes, I need new governor weights and springs from Mr. Woodworth, but they’ll have to wait for me to find $50…

And for $4 Kim couldn’t resist

Some progress pictures, Steering gear - I don’t think it needs a lower support below the worm, but we’ll see.

The knob is from a Case L tractor. Yes, it’s oversize for a model, but the size works well with Kim’s malformed hand.

The factory Mason engine’s Stephenson reverse… It LOOKS spindly because it was designed for high speed. But it will do the job…
(http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt7/tigerlillie06/His%20Stuff/P9250005.jpg)
I tried this flywheel for size. I don’t think I’ll use it because the rim is cracked around one of the spokes. I need to find one about 15-16" x 4" wide
(http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt7/tigerlillie06/His%20Stuff/P9250004.jpg)
Score! Today was a very busy scrounging day. I found a 16" x 4" flywheel for $15, a pair of 16" #80 sprockets that will work in place of bull gears for $5 each, and a pair of matching (#80) 10 tooth pinion sprockets for $11/pr… now I just need to find about 10 feet of half decent used roller chain, cheap. Jury is still out on whether the primary drive will be chain or gears. I’m figuring I need +/- 20:1 total reduction to get 3-3.5 mph at 300rpm… the final drive reduction is a bit less than 6:1 (I think I counted 58 teeth on those big sprockets)… so roughly 3.5:1 plus a pinion clutch? on the primary… My brain is fried at the moment. But I’m happy Ed Phillips preparing one of my $5 sprockets for boring out to 2".

So, these guys merged with Frack Bros. Inc to become Frick and Frack, Ltd? The devil made me do it. I’m going back outside, now.
