Nook vs Kindle vs Ipad

Ok yeah we’ve hashed this out before, but looks like there have been many stunning advances on all fronts, and I’m thinking that I might have a nicht for a new gadget, so whats everyone thinking these days?

Wait!! Febr 11th on the I pad new one coming supposed to be superior to the old ones??? Regal

Also there is a new I think Samsung pad of some kind offered by Verizon and some of the others. Not sure on the Samsung or if another manufacturer have to find or see commercial that is on tv all the time with one of the phone co.'s advertising it. Regal

I still prefer holding a paper and ink book in my hands. The idea of keeping my books in batteries seems a bit strange to this old phart.

I have a NOOK Book, it has a rechargeable battery.
It lasts 2 wks on a charge. This can hold well over 1000 books. That’s a room of books. Well look at all the trees you can save if half the reading public would use these instead of a paper book. Well what’s wrong with batteries you run trains with them. battery is already installed you don.t have to take anything apart to put one in.
Steve just pretend it’s a regular book. The women will love you 4 it.
Kindle or Nook are the two I considered. I’d stay away from the Samsung though.
I Pad is too expensive. Those people are nutz with their prices.

Here’s what I was talking about from Wirefly. Regal Not sure what carrier you have. Less than I pad

Me too!! At least we will still be able to read by candlelight when the power grid is down.

On CNN today, they reported a school district that requires each child has an iPad (or they can lease one for $20 a month).

The number of books required for kids in school now is huge and it’s actually a problem for them to get them to school.

Also, the cost of electronic books per child is much less than the printed material.

It’s coming and it’s here.

Regards, Greg

p.s. I prefer a magazine or book, you can turn the pages faster, flip back and forth, and the pictures are better than a small palmtop device.

otoh, for technical docs, nothing beats being able to search a document and find information electronically, and I have tons of docs on my computers, much more convenient than a library.

Me as well, I like to have a real book in my lap. (and besides they look nice in the bookcase, I can walk by and pick a book either for general reading or to get some specific info from. All by not having to ‘fire up’ some electronic gizmo.)

Tell you boys what, I have enough book to be my own Library! I still have a Kindle, it’s fun and I have access to a LARGE Number of books in electronic format and at times very convenient! However, just for you Steve, I like a real book too.

if money is not a issue with you then I would say go with the Ipad. you can do so much more then just read a book with it. I have set up one for my boss and one for his wife and they love the Ipads. If the cost is a issue then you can look at the color nook. My mom has that one and has been very very happy with it. She is 75 and was like so many in liking a book in her hand untill she/we gave her a nook and she now is in love with it.

My boss had a kindle untill he got his Ipad and was happy with it as well but likes the Ipad so much more.

Bought the wife a Nook for Christmas. So far she likes it. Looks good to me too. I’m anti “i”. I’m not sure why, just never liked Apple anything. It really urks me all the free press they get on TV.

e-books make all kinds of sense. Yes, it is coming for sure.

Right now from what I’m seeing the Nook is in the lead, yes i like seeing a shelf of novels too…its like seeing a group of old friends, but $16 for a paperback vs $6 in e format is quickly winning, there are some series I want to have the full paper versions on the shelf, but others its nice to not have to wait for the book to be delivered and a a much cheaper price especially if the series has over 20 volumes. And yes I have seen the Samsung Galaxy too, but its just as expensive as an Ipad and does not have a wireless feature. 3g only which means you basically have to pay extra for the plan to get it hooked up, so thats out of the running. And considering I’m on my 4th set of the Lord of the Rings, in the long run that alone could be worth the savings heheheheh. An Ipad is still in contention, with all the OT I’m getting, that would be hte ultimate in flexability, cant get apps to read both the Nook and Kindle formats, plus all the other stuff Nook Color, looks good…

They are great when you travel. Two 14 hr flights and two weeks in Russia w/o any English TV calls for a lot of reading. We each have our own Kindle and are able to read each other’s choices on our own device. A friend called me the other night all excited about a particular book. After we hung up, I went on line, downloaded a free sample, liked it, bought it, and was reading it 10 minutes after his call without any trip to the bookstore. Those of you who live some distance from a bookstore may find that convenient. We still treasure all the hardcover and paperback we have accumulated over 55 years.

I’ve looked at them, but, I dunno, just can’t connect with them.
Which seems quite odd, as much as I’ve liked sci-fi over the decades and all the devices of that nature which have been imagined there.

Kathy has hypothesized it might be a touch sensation kind of thing.

I would go with the ipad. I think you will be much happier with it and better quality. Plus you can do more with it. Why limit yourself with the others. If your going to do it and money is not an issue go for the best.

Im newer generation and still rather have a book. The biggest thing with electonics is they dont last forever like a book. I have books from the 1800’s you cant have a computer last that long.

Myself, I don’t want another “gadget” to keep up with. I can read electronic books on my computer or laptop.
Another single purpose gadget…I don’t think so
Ralph

I don’t think any of my books are on those gadgets.
Narrow gauge, mining, logging, maps,etc.
'Sides, I need pictures–lots of 'em!

U can read these by candlelight to, and they wont need charged before your candle burns out.

I guess a book is also a single gadget.
I don’t go for single use gadgets either, but the electronic book is really great.
When U travel around U can take 50 books with you and it isn’t any bigger or heavier than the gadget it self.
Try carrying 50 books with you on a bus or train, or even your bike. Don’t drop your lap top when your on your bike now.
I’ll get on my Whiplash and ride.
Talk practical here.
Come on you can see it. Save a tree or two, it wont hurt.

Oh no I just thought of something. Ralph didn’t want a single use gadget. Well a sound card is a single use gadget. so is a PC transmitter, or how about a transformer.
The track we run our trains on is a single use gadget also. The world is made up of single use gadgets. It just depends on ones mind set.
