After reading much of the speculation where this stuff originated from I decided to order some - frugal me figured out that ordering three or four would give the most shipping buck for the money :roll: - three were available. No, not in the RhB brown, I got two silver and one yellow.

The stuff arrived today and here goes with the comparison to the LGB item and the RhB proto. Mind you since we have the reno guys in the house and my “archives” stowed in a 20’ container in the driveway, this will be a bit slower going.

But the most important item up front:
No! NEWQIDA TOYS FACTORY LTD does not have the LGB moulds!

Their items are close copies of the LGB stuff, including all the mistakes that LGB made as regards replicating the proto. :wink: :smiley:
But that is no surprise!

Do you know if the NEWQIDA stuff was pantographed from an LGB model?
Or:
Was it pantographed from an LGB mould?

I don’t know anything about the processes involved, but if you wanted to make an exact knock-off of any molded product, couldn’t you just you just use the original as a master to make molds from? You would certainly have some generational loss, but if you are going for a cheap knock-off I’d think that would be the fastest way.

And the bottom of the box shows more “potential” items. The only part that was rattling in two boxes was the el. train line socket from the platform end.

The black roof is the one from NEWQIDA. It shows the typical milling traces. The LGB roof has the typical EDM finish

“Latest technology” (as noted on the label) goes only so far i.e. it quite possibly includes the means of copying the competition’s product (3D scanning) but not necessarily the same mouldmaking technology, as can be seen in the above picture. The D-shaped ejection pins sure leave their mark! Most likely they were a “retro-fit” since the part wouldn’t “pop-out” of the mould without considerable distortion on the platform overhang. This despite Newqia adding extra ejectors on that end. That is quite common: inaccurate moldmaking leads to a few surprises. :slight_smile:

Tony and Jon,

In my “wild dreams” I have visions of the Chinese using “Latest Technology” i.e. 3D-scanning, then directly to CAD-CAM production. But having the end product in my hands (instead of looking at pictures) makes me question my “foolish dreams”.

It’s still possible, but I have my doubts. :wink: :slight_smile:

Inventory varies, but is usually better at the SLC shop.

One of the RhB Forum members bought the steam engine. He’s convinced if there ever should be a steam engine race that engine would win. :wink: :slight_smile:

Yes, JB. According to the reply that one of the German guys received from LGB: They are aware of the knock-offs and evaluating remedies.

PS my archives are still in the 20 ft container standing in the driveway, the painters are scheduled for coming week. It’s a bitch not having the pertinent info right at hand.
So there won’t be much happening before Christmas in the measure/compare/test section. However, if you thought LGB’s wheelsets out of China were bad, wait until you see the runout on the Newquida wheels!

Hard to tell, but the way things work nowadays, it wouldn’t really surprise me.

You look at the recent career timeline of a certain Michael Stephens, the progressive transition of certain MDC tooling to PIKO and (if one were to believe in a certain mythology - neither you nor I do) one could exclaim: “The Lord works in mysterious ways!” :wink: :smiley: :wink:

OTOH as events in the past have proven time and again “What goes around, comes around” or as the German say “Es ist nicht aller Tage Abend!” (Things may take a turn yet). :wink: :slight_smile:

PS BTW that is the same Michael Stephens who once told me in a post on MLS - after reviewing some of my comparison tables regarding LGB RhB items: “I didn’t realize they were that far off.”
That’s quite understandable, I always struggle with marketing concepts, too. :wink: :slight_smile:

The Gbk-v and Gbk go all the way back to 1911/13, a modernization phase started in 1949 and continued for more than 30 (!) years (1982).

Pick the right numbers and one can have the old and the new run in the same era. :wink: :slight_smile:

This thread is timed perfectly. I have some of these cars on the way to me. Didn’t know who made them but the ebay seller indicated they were from a chinese manf. low level line. Same cars as the higher end stuff, just missing some of the details. At a little over $20.00 per car w/ shipping, I figure they will make good runners after I replace the wheels based on what another poster said.

Got the cars. They are worth the $20.00, no more. The tank cars are a little nicer. While they still have that plastic look to them, its not as bad as the red box car. The red box car I have is shiney and would need some proper “weathering” to help it out. Also, the couplers on it do not seem to be at the same height as LGB or even those on the tank car. I will need to work on those a little. There is also some rubbing of the brake shoes against the flanges when the car runs. I probably won’t purchase anymore of the box cars. The tank cars as I said previously, are a little nicer. I have two blue ones and am happy with those. I may pick up a few of the other ones.

I always found ALL brand new cars from all manufacturers to be “shiny” and toylike right out of the box, even the high end Accucraft stuff, they ALL need a little “treatment” at the weathering bench., so these NewQ items with proper “treatment” will look just as fine as any LGB or other item thats also been “treated”.

Well, at the risk of being a party-pooper, I bought two of the fake LGB passenger cars at the Llanfair show last month to re-hash. The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway here in mid-Wales has two ex-MaV cars that look VERY similar to the old DR cars, the ‘prototypes’, hence my interest. At £35 each instead of £185, I thought I was doing pretty well.

With a bit of gratuitous paint and general pimping of the interior they will look pretty good to me - especially at 8 feet.

At £70.00 for both, plus £5.00 for paint, that leaves me with £300.00 to buy metal wheels and interior lighting…and lots of people!!!
