I think that rolling stock, as long as it will hold couplers and trucks, pretty much can be of any quality level. You can repaint, add details, etc.

It’s the locomotives that will really tell the difference in quality, design, materials. If the drivetrain is weak, or it won’t track right, it becomes really apparent.

Love to see more on their locos.

I was asked to try to fix one for a friend not that long ago; a small German outline 2-6-2T. It’s a couple of years old, like I think all of them it was battery powered with a 7.2v NiCd battery and a fairly simple, 27mhz I would guess, r/c system; and when he bought it to me it wouldn’t work. I quickly established that the battery wasn’t holding a charge and replaced it with an NiMH battery, and it worked OK. We retired to celebrate, but hadn’t gone very far when it started smoking, but it has not got a smoke unit…

I quickly separated the battery and got down to causes; broken insulation on the battery wires shorting. There was no fuse on the loco that I could see. The rx/esc was still working so I installed a fuse, replaced the duff wiring and a couple of other bits where the insulation looked decidedly friable, reinstalled the 7.2v NiMH battery and the job was done.

(Lesson learned, BTW, is don’t assume the obvious problem is the only problem!)

I don’t still have the loco (he took it away with him of course) but from my observation:

a. The wheels, motion and mechanism are plastic, delrin by the look, but the loco tracked OK
b. It’s quite light and I’m not sure I would add much weight as I don’t know how strong the mechanism really is
c. But it pulled two Bachmann J&S and one Newqida coach up my 3% grades quite easily

Given my experience with this one I would certainly treat the electrics with caution, and before doing anything else would install a fuse, but apart from that for light service it seemed like a reasonable engine which is after all availabe at a very good price.

Hans, yes they are a bargain, that’s why they are calling my name.

Greg, I agree, a few details and a good coat of paint can improve many of the lesser expensive models out there. That is why most of my home road (P&CS) rolling stock is Bachmann. A little dressing up and they don’t look too bad.

Steve, I wish the techs I work with would figure that out. They fix the obvious problem, and then I have to go back a day or 2 later and fix all the other problems.

Dropped by a German forum that I visit very infrequently. A rather heated discussion about the “merit of the cheap Chinese junk”. Well till some one (reasonably) gently pointed out that the quality and conformance to proto is better than the product from a certain German producer at a multiple of the Newqida price. As in Oooops!

My “new” Newqida observation car arrived in the mail today and I thought you all might like to take a look.

It arrived in good shape and I was impressed at its rather large size and heft. One of the trucks was mounted backwards but it was easily remedied with a screw driver.

The model measured 22.75" in overall length.

This scaled out to 38 feet in 1:20.3.

It had these nifty little drop down walkways over the couplers.

Overall it had nice fit and finish. My wife liked the fact that is “was lettered for a doctor…with the big DR.” We had a little chat about the German railway system.

Of course I had to try a B&W set up to try and look like the prototype.

I took the safety railings off as Tennesseans are a pretty tough bunch and don’t really need all that durn safety stuff.

Overall I am very pleased with this model and feel it was a great find for the $$$.

If possible, I may keep the green as it has a very nice finish. Agree I need to Americanize the car somewhat. Thinking arch bar trucks, body mount Kadees and decals.

I’ll be getting a couple here so’s I can replicate the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad [Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach/Wheeler] with my Heisler and caboose.

Like I did with the full-body cars, I’ll be converting those flat seats to slat seats - and putting a set of arch-bars trucks on too.

That’s if they ever appear here in UK…

I bought 2 each of the Left and right Switches, from the video posted earlier in this thread the reviewer had problems with derailments at the switches, so I looked at this issue first, basically the screws that hold the points in place needed a little dab of glue to prevent them from unscrewing as the switch points are thrown, other then that the points work just as good as say aristo, usa trains, or bachman switches.

I am going to test mine in a shaded part of the layout for the next year or so and give a better review of them later on.
