New Site - some things to think about

Playing around the site this morning and I came across a few things that are not blindingly obvious - until you look for them.

The place to set everything up is the button called “SETTINGS” at the top of the page - to the left of the “SIGN OUT” button.

This is where you can REALLY personalize your experience.

I’m sure everyone wants something different, but I’ll give you some idea of what I chose.

Under the PRIVACY tab, there is an option:

Profile PrivacyWho can view your profile?

I selected All Registered Members, but you can limit it to just your friends, or even everyone.

There’s also some options about what will show up in your activity page, I just left them all checked.

The next tab to deal with is Notifications. This is where you’re going to control the amount of email you get, based on forum activity.

Me, I unchecked most of them, but this is a personal choice.

If you would like to get a freight shed, you can go to the subscription tab. This will give you a bunch of online storage you can use for posting pictures.

There’s lots more, I’m sure, so start the discussion!

I forgot the General tab: Here you can set the time zone that you’re in so that the posts show up with your local time.

Nice!

The new profile picture is pretty cool. You load a picture from your hard drive, and it resizes it appropriately.

Then, if you want to make part of that pciture your thumbnail, you just press the edit thumbnail button. It lets you take a part of that picture for your thumbnail and resizes it appropriately.

The original picture I selected:

The resized profile picture:

And the part of it that I selected as my thumbnail:

Need to update your tag line? I wanted text and a graphic. I wanted the picture to be clickable so it would take you to my web site if clicked on.

After some experimentation, I came up with this:

Bruce [url=www.jbrr.com][img]http://www.jbrr.com/Pics/GIFS/JBLogoGreen.gif[/img][/url]

For some reason I could NOT but the http:/ in from of my URL - everytime it did, it also removed the colon!

Anyway, that code gives you the tag line below and if you click on the picture, you go to my web site.

Thanks for the Tag line info Bruce. It was a long time ago when I figured that out on the old site. I had a heck of a time just figuring out where I had hosted the picture !

Now if I could just get two hot-linked images to sit side-by-side I’d be a very happy camper.

Well, I am a very happy camper now!!! Been wanting to add that Facebook badge for a while. Now the pressure is on to get the Facebook page updated

A few things to get used to with the new editor.

Quote Blocks: In the editor there is a quote button at the top far right. This button opens or closes a quote block.

This is in a quote block

This is not. Pressing the Quote link on a post automatically creates the quote block. You need to end it by pressing the quote command burtton or your new text will be in the quote blocks.

Line Formatting: The new editor uses HTML style line rules. If you press return once, you get a line space line like this.

Pressing it twice (like we are used to) will give you double spacing like this.

On the old forum there would just be one space between the above paragraph and this one.

There are lots of nice features to this editor like Fonts and Size

Personaly I like the 10 Pt Tahoma like this. You can also do Bold Italic Underline and Strikethrough without any special forum code.

Do you want Color ? It’s another editor button.

Don’t like the background color? Change it or use to highlight text.

Lots of power in this little editor. If only it had a spell check or supported the bowser’s spell checker. Your going to see how bad I really spell.

You are, or You’re…not your, Jon…!!!

Well, this was a surprise! I didn’t realize the website was being changed. Let’s see if I got my signature figured out… Yep, that worked!

I don’t see a “Preview” button for posting. Am I just overlooking it, or is that no longer an option?

Boy this nice. Found stuff i forgot i had from the old site and nice album set up.

I see the font size is larger on our HD screen now to see better like other computers we have with same size fonts… nice work.

How can you tell which topics have new messages? And is there any way to jump to the new messages without wading through the old ones?

I mentioned that yesterday. It may be one of the many things he’s still working on. He was bangin out “fixes” left and right, but there is only so much one person can do. I was really impressed by how much he did get fixed Sunday. There really were a ton of small issues.

Ralph

Is there a method to clear out old updates on the top line next to your name? Also, like Ray mentioned, we need a PREVIEW button when composing a reply.

Good one, Jon…!!

How is an apostrophe like a nosehair?

To some these things are invisible; to others they jar.

That was a late posting John…way passed your bed time…!!

…or should that be: past…somehow I thought that time had passed you by, this morning…or maybe we were both living in the past…but who cares…sometimes our best thoughts come in the wee hours of the morning…!!

Good morning, John…

Bruce. I like the new site and went in and updated part of my profile. But where’s the stuff that was in my Trainshed? Not that there’s anything that is a keeper, or that can’t be replaced. But I was just wondering. Also, what is that box with BB code and all the “personalize” stuff? As usual, my computer ignorance is showing. BTW, I clicked on your building photos in your album. Nice!

Joe,

It should all still be there. Click on the “Freight Shed” tab up top.
