New Site Software (was: Sneak peek)

Thanks guys. I’m really trying hard to not have any real issues carrying the users and forums over. It looks like its working for the most part. I’ve been running the importer ever few days to keep the development site current, and seeing how the threads compare.

Once I pull the trigger, I’ll do a 180-day sweep again just to make sure I get everything recent.

Moving the advertising and forum sponsors is proving a bit difficult, but Im getting it.

Thanks SO MUCH Bob for handling all this… not to mention creating the site in the first place.

If there’s some way I can help or test-break something, please let me know.

yes indeed, I’m happy to help qa/test/click buttons you had no idea any idiot would click/etc.

Thanks Bob for what you’re doing. Very much appreciated out here on the West Coast :).

Very much appreciated, Robert!!

It looks like the current plan is, sometime around 10pm Friday night, I will put this site into maintenance mode, re-copy over the users/forums/etc, and then start moving the DNS entries to the new server, setting up mail, etc. Those changes should propagate correctlt overnight.

The new site will be available for read-only once that happens. Outbound email will be disabled, so you wont be able to set your password.

Saturday morning, I will verify that we can reach LSC as expected, and open the site, and start monitoring logs, my private email, etc. If any of you will be available Saturday morning to work through issues, PM me. I have a Slack channel for LSC that we can use, faster than email.

Note that this is a “no turning back” changeover. The current LSC software is from 2014, and is far past its end of life. It is insecure, slow, and does not play well with modern browsers. Come what may, we will be on Discourse as of this Saturday.

Just so the rest of you know, I’m FAIRLY sure that Bob is NOT talking about me…even though it sure sounds like it.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

It sure looks like Bob is doing a great job migrating data to the new software. Yay Bob.

For those who are nervous (and it’s software, so it is ok to be nervous), a reminder of the utility that I made for downloading your topics: [link]

Again, I have complete faith that Bob can transfer the data, but just wanted to remind folks of this utility as the current site will be down for good as of Friday. I’ll be taking my utility down after things have settled down.

How exciting!

I agree! Lots more exciting than, say, New Years Eve, where I go to bed like always around 9, and just roll over when a neighbor or two lights off a roman candle around midnight.

This is far more significant and life-changing!

I will be gone this coming weekend, so idiot testing will not be happening, sorry! Hopefully I can carve out some time to put my dismal computer skills to work by finding issues BD didnt think of.LOL

WOO HOO Bob! Look forward to the new site. If it blows up, someone email me at [email protected] and let me know. Thanks Bob Hope it is seamless and no big issues.

Don’t forget to take the TELEphone off the hook before starting!

Good luck and thank you for LSC !

well, let’s hope, that Mr. Murphy is busy elsewhere, this weekend.

Bob, thanks for all the time and hard work you’ve put into the new site so far and I look forward to putting it through its paces this weekend. I’m sure there will be hiccups, but we are all patient, lol.

Can you do all that the Rumbletalk site shows capabilities of with the chat you are going to use ?
