New site issues

Once Bob M. has the preview function working to include display of pictures it will be a lot easier to fix these type of formatting issues.

It seems to be working OK right now.

@Jon - When I composed the post I did exactly that, text - carriage return - URL - carriage return - text, etc.

When I posted the reply it got all bunched up. When I went into to edit, it was like one long run on sentence. Do I need to hit the enter key twice to get a carriage return?

@Jon - The above post which displays exactly the way I typed it into the Quick Reply box, when I go into Edit the post looks like this:

All bunched up like my original post I commented on. I did go back the the post and fix it, I just don’t understand why it changes the original enter/carriage returns.

I agree there seems to be some issue with either the Quick Reply or The Edit boxes that messes with the formatting.

I just went to edit this Quick Reply post and all the formatting disappeared. Once edited to correct it seems to stay the next time it is edited.

Bob M. - Please put this on yout to do list.

Off topic I know, but I was wondering if Bob could tell me how to capture the screen image and post it into the reply field. I am still using XP and don’t understand HTML at all.

Tony, Using XP follow the following steps:

When you have the screen image you want to capture, on the upper right hand corner of the keyboard is a ‘print screen’ key, press it. It will capture the entire screen as you see it.

Open ‘Microsoft Paint’ (should have been installed with the OS). Paste the screen image you just captured with ‘print screen’ into paint. Paint will default to a .BMP file for saveing. ‘Save As’ a JPG file.

You can then open the JPG file in any software program you wish to edit it. I use the ‘Microsoft Office Picture Manager’ supplied with the OS (and presumably installed).

Once this is accomplished you can post this picture just like any other picture.

Good Luck Tony. Bob C.

Thanx Bob. I didn’t know that either…

Anyway, in your spare time (snicker) if you could teach this software to remember our logins,

Steve,

Try clearing the cookies on your web-browser. I’m having problems on one of my computers, but not others. So the problem may well be on our end.

Ralph

That didn’t help, Ralph. I’m using Firefox 18.0.1, with which I’m having tons of problems, so that may be it. Frustrating, but not too much. It’ll sort itself out.

I had the same issue with Firefox 18.0.1. Once I cleared my cookies AND cleared my history, it now keeps me signed in. Don’t know why just clearing the cookies doesn’t work.

The original design had a 600-something pixel width for the forum posts, which was really too small, and pointed out by numerous people. I expanded it to take an 800-pixel wide image, which is a standard “post to a website” size, and one of the options on most “resize my image” software.

In reply I ask:

So the forum posts are now 200px wider than they were on the old site? That seems like a good thing. If this is the case I should think the old pictures would fit on the new forum pages with a margin to spare.

Is that muddle-headed of me?

Here’s the rub: If the page is now actually wider, how come pictures that fit just fine side to side on the old site, now have about, say, 20% of the image completely cut off the right side?

No, the old forum was wider.

The new forum was originaly 600 pixels wide when Bob rolled it out for us to Beta test.

After comments about the width, he was able to squeeze out enough for 800 pixels wide by reducing the area to the left containing our profile pictures.

Ralph

I can’t remember exactly, but I think the old forum would expand to whatever you browser was. If a picture was wider than the browser window, a scroll bar was added. This software is a fixed width (for wider device compatability) and eliminates the scroll bar on too-wide pictures.

ONe thing that I checked fairly frequently on the home page of the old site was the railroad news. I never knew what sort of oddity would turn up there.

I don’t see it on the new home page.

Can you put it on your list, Bob?

Thanks.

Steve,

I agree. The RR news feed was quite interesting.

Ralph

Added to my list. Thanks for picking that one up, another one that fell through the cracks.

Thanks, Ralph, for your useful information. You were polite about it too. I wish I could say that for every answer I’ve received. Manners matter.

I decided to try editing those posts of mine, and in the edit window I notice that the image is there, complete with resize buttons on the corners. This looked easier than I had feared, so I decided to take your advice after all and resize the first one on my thread. It D-I-S-A-P-P-E-A-R-E-D !!!

Now, I imagine I can repost the image, but I thought I might as well report this outcome to whom it may concern. All this comes in the middle of the Build Challenge, as we approach our deadline, so it really has buggered things up somewhat, to say the least.

Tried reposting my pic but no joy… Now that first post of mine is empty! I go to my files but can’t get the url for my pix, I get to see the image, but it doesn’t post. If you can help me, great, otherwise I’ll hunt around here for awhile for a solution. Big thanks.
