Large Scale Central

New site issues

Bob or others…what am I not getting. I can’t go to chat unless I am logged in and then when I get there it shows no one is chatting although I know several are from viewing the chat. What do I need to do? Cleared the cookies etc. Not a biggy but would like to clean this up.

I designed my posts on the Build Challenge to fit side to side on the old site. Worked great. Now when I pull up that thread some is missing on the right side. Here’s a shortcut:

John - This site intentionally crops images over 800 pixels wide. When we were beta testing some found that an annoyance, but I discovered if you right click on the picture and select View Image you can see the entire photo.

As they say in the software biz; It’s not a bug, its a Feature !!!

Is there a way to just subscribe to a whole forum? I would like e-mail notification anytime there is a post on the Power/Control forum.
I am also finding it difficult to identify new posts of interest. The old format with all the new stuff on the left was very informative.
The update notification is also a bit annoying. Even though I mark everything as “read”, it keeps showing up. And a direct response to an email notification seems to require a new log-in.

I mentioned before that the notifiction emails did not have a hot link to the topic and that has somewhat been addressed. The problem is, the new hot link doesn’t work correctly. When I click on it, I get this address and the browser can’t find it…

No you can’t. The View Image choice just ain’t there. And who wants that extra step anyway?

How on earth can butchering the old thread be a feature? Why were the folks who didn’t want the width reduced ignored? WHY on Earth would it be narrowed anyway?

I repeat, I made my posts a particular width so they’d be visible to readers. The way things are right now is no good at all.

John,

You must be using some version of Internet Explorer. You are correct. When I right click on your pictures in IE there is no View image selection. When I do the same in Firefox or Opera browsers, it does appear and work.

John Le Forestier said Why were the folks who didn’t want the width reduced ignored? WHY on Earth would it be narrowed anyway?

Because doing otherwise would require starting over and throwing out a lot of hard work. Please remember that what ever time and effort Bob puts into this web-site comes out of his “free” time. This is not his day job.

I would suggest that you going back and fixing your artcle to fit the new format would be a lot less work than Bob starting over and finding new software that will expand to fill our screen

Half my old threads say By Boomer some say by deleted member. Those by deleted member are not visible and cannot be accessed or edited by me.

Not a hot issue. just letting you know.

Boomer

Can you point me to the ones that aren’t right? I can fix them up from this end.

And they wern’t ignored. The original design had a 600-something pixel width for the forum posts, which was really too small, and pointed out by numerous people. I expanded it to take an 800-pixel wide image, which is a standard “post to a website” size, and one of the options on most “resize my image” software.

The site has been optimized size-wise to work on as many browsers/devices as possible (including iPad. I’m currently in discussion about having iPhone and Droid versions developed as well).

The test/demo site was also online since July last year, and I had been constantly updating and asking for feedback. Many of you provided invaluable insight during that time, most of which has been incorporated into the site design. There are still two major issues (Preview Post, and Advanced Search) both of which we completely missed in the original reviews. There are also about a dozen nice-to-have items, and a few usability additions that I want to make.

But also like Ralph said, I do this in my spare time. Im not making money running this site, and it is an incredible amount of work to maintain, which was one of the primary reasons I HAD to upgrade the site software.

And, to be blunt, its a numbers game. LSC has around 450 active users (users over a certain level of activity over the last X days, so sign-up-post-and-leave posters dont get counted), with around 150 of them active on any one given day. If one or two of them decide that they dont like the forum colors, or the new front page, or my new haircut, and leave the site, well, quite frankly, they wont really be missed. People don’t like change, that’s a given, but you also need to adapt, and relax. We are talking about toy trains here, folks, not nuclear missiles.

end rant

Robert, your efforts are much appreciated from this little part of the world. As far as I’m concerned, you’ve done a bang-up job.

Bob, You got a new haircut? I am so out ouf the loop.

Anyway, in your spare time (snicker) if you could teach this software to remember our logins, I think that most of us would appreciate it, especially those of us who are short on memory.

Bob - Are those of us who log in pretty much on a daily basis, but not necessarily post counted in the ‘Active Users’ catagory?

Steve,

Try clearing the cookies on your web-browser. I’m having problems on one of my computers, but not others. So the problem may well be on our end.

Ralph

Change is good. Keeps peple on their toes. Life would be boring if everything were the same.
Site is great Bob. Im loving it.

That didn’t help, Ralph. I’m using Firefox 18.0.1, with which I’m having tons of problems, so that may be it. Frustrating, but not too much. It’ll sort itself out.

Next - Not a complaint, more of a wish, could we make the quick reply box the full width of the forum (yellow portion)?

OK, now an issue. What gives with the formatting of the pictures in my post here http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/17860/-/view/post_id/198397
Seems as if the pic is not 800 wide it screws up the formatting, and it seems that carriage returns are ignored for spacing.

Bob Cope - Check out this post… http://www.largescalecentral.com/forums/topic/18246/working-on-bob-cope-s-picture-is/view/post_id/198408 You are just missing a bunch of returns. It will clean up just fine in the editor if the picture url is on a line by itself.

Once Bob M. has the preview funtion working to include display of pictures it will be a lot easier to fix these tpe of formatting issues.
