Why would you want MTH to change scales and make another existing loco? Is the USA inferior in some way? Why long awaited? I’m just not getting something obvious here?
A SD9 and a GP9 are two completely different locomotives. A SD7 or SD9 would make a great addition to the already stable GP and SD fleet. A SD9 is a 6 axle locomotive with a 16 cylinder 1750 HP prime mover, while the GP9 has the same prime mover and HP but with two less traction motors. SD9’s were great for switching, heavy low speed drag service. Think of a SD9 as a GP9 on steroids. SD9 tractive effort 75,000 pounds, GP9 40,000 pounds. Same prime mover, so you can see what the difference with two more traction motors makes.
