New car float

Here’s something that hasn’t happened for many many years

Well, that floats my boat!

Cool stuff. Will have to share that with the Google Plus gang.

They NEED to ease the truck traffic congestion up there. Good way to do it.

Ahhhh now you can have a ‘modern’ railway, aaaand rail barge division on your water feature/pool!!

doug c

p.s. “…They NEED to ease the truck traffic congestion up there….”

Yeah probably been stressing out all the distracted drivers looking down diddling in their laps to glance up and see the brake lights of a big flat ass end of a semi initiating a quick slowdown or smokin’stop, due to another gut-wrenching movement of another distracted driver out-in-front (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)IMHO (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I agree Ken, they need to take as much truck traffic as possible off the Polaski Skyway before the thing falls in the river. It has already been deemed unsafe, they just have no alternate to offer.

Nice find BD, I like it. Not narrow gauge, but what the heck…

This is like out here watching Metro rebuild what was already here 50 years ago when Pacific Electric was still in operation. It means someone is willing to admit that what worked 40 years ago still works today and for the exact same reasons. That folks is called ‘progress’ (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

What was old is new again.

Everything old is new again!

And eventually society will judge what’s new now to be old again.

Then several years later the tide will come back in.

I think you have a “car float fetish”

My opinion only though

And I keep holding back hoping you will pass me !

as much truck traffic as possible off the Polaski Skyway

I think the skyway is cars only - has been since before I lived around there in the 1980s. And I think it is closed for rehabilitation - or at least 1/2 of it (one side) is closed.

There’s been proposals for a freight tunnel between NJ and Brooklyn - apparently starting in 1893

Great post and great idea, either standard or narrow gauge. The car float terminals that went no where once they reached Manhattan and other parts of New York have a whole railroad history of there own. Great floats and great small engines to work around the freight terminals.

You could model the entirety of one of these cross-harbor terminals with room to spare. Harlem Station of the Erie RR was 487 x 350 feet. In 1:29, that’s roughly 16 x 13 feet.

I always liked the Bronx Terminal of the CRRofNJ. Now that’s a place where R1 curves would be appropriate!

Isn’t this an interesting picture? The float bridge approach must be on property extending along the river’s edge. The truck on the bottom left may be trying to get in to the terminal, but is blocked by cars sitting on the crossing. I don’t see a box cab or a source of power. Right next to the building on the left side, looks to be some form of an idler car. Note also the above track derrick for unloading a flat, plus the team tracks where cargo is transferred directly to the awaiting trucks or visa versa. note the firewalls in the wharehouse. And the "Make Mine Ruppert"sign. Didn’t somebody build a version of this? Seems like there was talk of it at York, one year.
