Im looking for some close ups of the 4-4-0 American. Im looking for how the piping ect… goes on the outside. Everything Im finding is far shots.
Shawn,
There are a lot of different “Americans” from a lot of different era’s.
One good source of information is a book by John H. White called
“American Locomotives” An engineering history 1830-1880
Or, just Google a picture that looks good to you.

Shawn,
Here’s what you want. Originally published in 1871 American Locomotive Engineering and Railway Mechanism by G. Weissenborn Glenwood Publishing did a reprint of this book beginning in 1967 along with a companion text volume later. 95 beautifully done plates that show several locomotives, mostly 4-4-0 types in extreme detail even down to individual parts for each engine. The drawings were done the old fashioned way (of course) all originally inked by hand and to scale.
The first locomotive, a 4-4-0, is represented by 15 plates showing first an over all drawing of the locomotive and then proceeding to show everything from frame, boiler tubes, valve gear, drivers, scads of individual parts and ending with two plates detailing the tender right down to the frame. More detail than you’ll ever want. The biggest challenge will be what to leave off your model.
The link http://www.idsabooks.com/cgi-bin/idb455/5928 has one for sale for the princely sum of $25 used. I must state however that I have not done business with this person so you’re on your own but the descriptions and prices seem proper and above board for the items offered.
I hope the link works.

I was thinking the same thing. He actually makes this look good and it was “a rough year for the rooster”.

I think they make a cute couple
When AndyC is around Rooster, he always has that look in his eyes.
I’m going to have to update that loco pic. Rooster’s latest wild-eye photo would match Andy better.
