Bruce hit on a good idea. I’ve always enjoyed your post and build logs and would hate to seem them suffer a demise.

What about starting your own site, hosting yourself there and posting logs and such there then linked or copy/pasted to the different forums.

you could even copy/paste your old logs from the current site and correct as you went along.

can’t you imagine klunkerboy.com

COOL!

Perusing some of VS’s other forums, it’s much the same; words in posts turned into hyperlinks for products (Who knew “house” would link to Charmin?), and on a few of them, periodic posts within the thread that just insert a banner ad into the body of the thread as opposed to the top and/or bottom.

I did find it quite humorous that the rat-lover’s forum was covered with ads for D-Con.

Time will tell if folks tolerate it or not. The mass exodus at the beginning is expected. MLS’s legacy will come once the dust settles. These features are jumping out at us now because they’re new. A year from now, who knows? Like any other changes at any forums we frequent, we complain at first, but then we get used to things, and very soon forget about the “old.”

I’m in much the same boat as Vic; I’ve got too many photos hosted there to just cut and run. I’ve been migrating my build logs to my personal blog for a few years now, and most of my posts relative to those projects there, here, and elsewhere have been little more than pointers to the blog. Beyond that, I don’t start many threads at all.

Still, I’m tempted to pick benign words within my posts and link to random YouTube videos.

If you believe the posts on the SoapSuds, folks are starting to pull up stakes.

The software this site runs on is not simple, everything is a work around and this took a little time to find the way this would work. I am sure this was a contributing factor to Shad having issues with upgrades he wanted to do on the site as well. You should only be seeing the ads for the site sponsoring vendors on here now. If you see anything else pearshaped please let me know asap.

Vic and others that have build logs over on MLS (and other sites),

Why not copy off the entire build log as a PDF and save it to your computer? Then you have save the build log (with pictures) without having to worry about them going ‘poof’. If for some reason in the future you or anyone else wants to see a past build log, you can simply upload the PDF?

I have a few build logs over on MLS that I’m thinking about doing just that with. My pictures (hosted off MLS) have disappeared in quite a few of my build logs. As for the future I think I’ll just stick to posting on LSC, and if I want too, I’ll link to it on MLS.

As George Harrison sang . . “All things must pass”. It was noticeable when MLS removed the archives, and half the articles too. Pouf - they are gone.

The same thing will happen with MLS. And with LSC - what will you do when Bob gets a job offer in the Seychelles and has no internet access and no time for trains? Or a train runs over his hand so he can’t type?

You’ve learned over the years that a computer can’t be trusted, so you back up every file (I hope! I have a 1TB disk for copies of the videos, an old 360GB disk for video storage, and 2 or 3 portables with my currently active files on them.)

The same is obviously true of websites. Back up your content! Store it on your own disk! Don’t trust the cloud - even iCloud or Google blogs can disappear at a moments notice.

I didn’t renew my MLS membership a couple of years ago, and recently Shad said he was cleaning up and making space by removing old files from 1st class space owners who hadn’t renewed. Any time now all my posts will be picture-less. So be it. Time to change my user id.

Dave…And I posted what cam up on my screen due to Admin wanted to know over there.
Over here it’s back to trains and fun with the hobby.

Craig T… PDF. Not a bad idea… Wish I had done that long time ago.

Had to laf at this from Pete Thornton post.
" The same thing will happen with MLS. And with LSC - what will you do when Bob gets a job offer in the Seychelles and has no internet access and no time for trains? Or a train runs over his hand so he can’t type? "

Guess if that happens, have to get a train group together and Flatten his auto tires so he can’t get to new job. Force him with stick under his Eye lids to watch us run his train and being his hands got run over by his train, we will run them for him, but mostly for us to have fun with his layout and trains. Oh. and we get to run the expensive ones too. hehehehe.
Just kidding Bob McC. but sounds good. lol.

Pete is right. My opinion is that we should not depend on anyone to actually store pictures. I guess I have lost a bunch on LSOL, but I have copies here. A good 1 terabite external hard drive only cost’s about 75$ or so. I have one that is parked in my safe. There are lots of cheap ways to store your photos, and documents, without relying on anyone else.

Paul

By the way, just saving it on your computer only is not a good idea. I had a hard drive at work once mechanically break. I lost a lot of teaching and research files. It would of been very expensive to pay someone to take the drive apart, and rescue my files. Fortunately had stuff on floppy discs at that time, and didn’t loose a lot.

Paul

Just a reminder. ALL hard drives WILL FAIL!!! You just don’t know when it will happen. sooner or latter. It will fail.

Have you guys looked at SD memory cards? prices come down, down, down … They even make very handy storage cassettes in case you’re anal (like I am!) and believe it has to be in order.

Bullshit…you’re just trying to defend your moderator status over there on the Shad stabbed me in the back MLS site.

Also be carful. There is a new virus out. I forget what its called but I know a few who got it. They encrypt all your files on the hard drive. Then they ask for a ransom usually $500 or something. They give you a few days, if you don’t pay, all files are lost. If you pay they will unlock your files. That’s why I don’t really save anything. Any pictures worthy of keeping get printed out. Is still like the old school way.

Snicker. He’s good at trying to defend the indefensible, Chuck. Note the word “trying”.

This is your one warning. Take this to private messages/email. TOC, don’t add to it.

CryptoLocker. There is a program to prevent it, not fix it. I have the program on my main computer to prevent infestation.

Don’t add to it. Aye.

OOOOOOO My, I feel my boxer shorts starting too warm up…

You Betcha LOL

This is not VS’s first foray into forum acquisition and how members respond to their changes. How we are responding to the ‘impending doom’ is chicken feed to how other fora, like the automotive sites reacted.

The initial reaction was to pack up and leave, but people being as they are that were settled in their comfortable ways, no doubt returned under a pseudonym and picked up where they left off. VS is not going to invest many thousands of dollars in a forum acquisition just to sabotage the site and destroy their golden goose. They have been through this scenario many, many times and the fact that they are still spending the dolars implies their strategy and insight into human behaviour is spot on. They would factor in a percentage of people leaving but know that the core group will remain, no matter what members of that group might post elsewhere.
