My indoor layout

Hey ty,

I was thinking about this very thing and was wondering how to incorporate back drop painting and 3d landscaping into a seamless transition. In HO I had back drops then the landscaping and there was always an unnatural separation. A plain where there was nothing. So I am thinking of things like trees that are half painted half actual tree sticking out of the wall. Same with rocks and maybe even buildings. Thoughts?

Well some of the hand made trees that I have for my Modular Layout have foliage on one side so that i can place them up against the backdrop . I do not paint the tree on the backdrop though. On my indoor layout i have the tunnel going into a wall. I built the hill or mountain and did paint the mountain continuing into the wall…

The next thing I did was paint the backdrop a solid blue. There are 3 colors of blue I use to paint a backdrop are Windjammer, Dusk Blue and Sail Blue. All are Olympic paints from Lowes. The windjammer is the darkest of the 3. I even painted the bottom of the shelves. Once that was dry I then went and painted the backdrop using all 3 colors. I put a new coat of Windjammer on the top and then blended the 3 down the backdrop The lightest color should stop just above your horizon.

Ty, or anybody else, if you want to go a step further, paint the horizon a greenish blue (phthalo blue) the middle sky a blue blue (cobalt) and the upper sky red blue (ultramarine). I wouldn’t say this, but as long as you’re using three different blues anyway…

edit: it’s full name is Phthalocyanine

John,

I understand what you are saying… There are so many choices when it comes to blues for the sky. If you look at the sail blue it is very light and may have a bit of green in it… This combo has worked well for me so far. Plus by no means am I an artist . I just have to go with what I know or done in the past…

Devon, usually when transitioning from 3d to 2d backdrop, one uses a dip in the scenery or some other view separator. If the 3d scenery dips down right in front of the backdrop, then the viewer sees a hill, and no seam between the backdrop and the scenery. A solid fence could also serve the view break function, as well as a hedgerow or building,

Next I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with the corner? Just have the train go through a hole in the wall?? Can’t do that. So I started making up a tunnel portal . I will make it as if its going into the side of a hill or a mountain. I started by framing up the portal with foam. I then had to bring the sides down at an angle. Here what I have done so far…

You have an unnatural addiction to pink foam

The Next thing I started was working on the hill. I forgot to take a picture of the faom supports but once they were up I added the cardboard strips and weaved them together. I then went back and added the Woodland Scenic plaster cloth. I had some laying around I needed to get rid of. Once that was dry I went back with a layer of paper towels and hydrocal to stiffen it up…

I thought I told you. I have a lot of foam. A contractor just replaced a roof on a school this summer and They allowed me to have all of the scraps. I got about $500 or more worth of free 1" foam…

Not a bad thing to have a lot off for modeling (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Next I took A 1x4x8’ cedar board and cut it up to make The tunnel portal and retaining walls. The wood was precut and then stained with black and brown Fieblings dye and ETOH. Then it was all put together.

It looks great! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

I like that.

very nice as usual

Great!

Now all you need to do is model the inside of the tunnel !

or at least paint everything in there in black.

Thanks Guys,

I will get to the interior of the tunnel before to long. I am trying to get the exterior finished first…

Thanks Ty

Ok Guys,

I like getting the backdrop painted so i don’t have to paint it later… so to remind you of my blank slate…

I painted this in about 30 minutes. There are 2 primary colors Paynes Grey and Medium Yellow. I will blend the hill or mountain later…

i still have to figure he lighting on this area…
