My First Build

Wow Devon I just checked out this post , great job !

Thanks Mike it has been a hoot to build. Not the best but I am happy for a first attempt and building a ground up loco. But its time to get it done.

Well good news for the build,

After my failed attempt to print the decals I went to the pro. I worked with Stan to come up with a sheet of decals. I haven’t received them yet but for what it was going to cost me for one set of vinyl for one loco, Stan is printing decals for three locos, three flat cars, three box cars, and one caboose. Can’t wait to get them and get them on the loco so I can do some weathering and then it will be done except the guts.

I want to have it running by Sept (maybe if I set a deadline I will complete it) then I can maybe get a litte runing on some of the club members layouts before I have to put her away for winter.

OK so color me happy. A gigantic thank you to Stan Cedarleaf. His decals are awesome. I got them today and I have to say I am thrilled. I love the color. White would have been to common, yellow to bright. I love the yellow/orange just right.

This made my day. Now I need to touch up all spots dull the whole thing down with a Matte. Then weather it. Then it will be waiting for the controller and sound card.

Looks really good. Hopefully I can see it in person at the NP convention…by then you’ll have a whole train done!

That is actually the plan. I am entrusted to set up a modeling display. There is a certain photograph of the CR&N that I am setting out to copy for this display. It features the #3 loco, two box cars, a converted box car caboose, and two coaches. So there is a method to all the madness. I also plan to build a copy of the CR&N depot and water tank from another photo. All this will be in Fn3. I am also building an HO version of the CR&N depot after it was moved and converted to a freight depot that will go with a model of the NP depot someone else already built. These will all be on display at the convention.

Hum I wonder if I should get in contact with the convention hosts to see if I can present something about my NP research project…

You might check the NP/GN joint site to see if they have any plans. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread!

Ha I wish. have contacted them and they don’t. But it is easy, it is a rectangle and the dimensions are on the Sanborne fire map. I have photos thought not a good one of the front. There will be some artistic lisc.

As for contacting the convention hosts, well let me say I think I can help you. Her name is Shauna Hillman and she is the director of the Wallace NP depot. I am working closely with her to get some of the stuff rolling. I will likely be one of the guest speakers myself. I can put in a good word if you would like. We are co authoring a travel guide for the convention and I will be working with her to do a CR&N display at the museum. It is probably safe to say I have at least a little pull.

Well its been awhile since I visited this project. She is my first love and have been neglecting her. Sine ou last visit I had just lettered her. Since then I realized I was missing one serious component. The hand rails on the boiler. To date she has one side done. I used some cribbage pegs I have to make a mold to cast the stanchions in low melt metal. I used the metal rod that is used for those sprinkler marker flags (thanks Kevin Strong for bringing those to my atention from a bridge build thread he commented on) for the actual handrail. I will post picks when the other side is done.

Whats left. . . I need finish the other handrail, make the final attahemnt between tender and loco, connect the hoses between tender and loco, add some wood to the tender, and hook up all the electronics. Well the best news is I just received a present in the mail from Australia. I just received my TX-8 transceiver, my ESC and receiver, and an installation kit from Tony at RCS-Australia. I need to get the batteries yet, they will be some combination to give me 14.8 volts at around 4000 mAh.

The radio gear was intended for the GP-9 I just purchased but somehow it seems wrong to power another loco before breathing life into my girl. So I will be using this gear in her. . . at least temporarily. Eventually this will be swapped into the GP-9 when I can get another ESC/RX. At any rate I plan to get her done very shortly. I have a few things to finish up but this has to become a priority.

Pssstttt; Fireless, passenger cars, switches, oil cars, track planning, couplers, sound cards, dismals, oh boy! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Oh we call it a Drawbar … a solid bar between two pins; the engine and tender attachment… Usually attached to the tender, so you lift the rear of the engine and move the tender until the pin slips into the hole.

The walls have eyes! We be watching! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Be very careful what you put in print, some will gleefully point out your … short comings… oops too late.

Oh what fun! Please take this as light hearted ribbing from another with the same afflictions.

Your Bud,

John

Of course I was referring to what was left on this project. Not what was left on my list.

And yes I am aware of your good natured ribbing. Of all people I would hope you would be rooting for this one

How did I miss this project?

For a first time project it sure was ambitious and it came out great. Good job.

Buddy I thought my drawbar description would help you towards that end. Keep it simple.

Oh the other? Why just sharing my demons…

yesterday I wrote my list, then my mind brought up other items on the list and by the time I discounted each one, it was too late to do anything… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Your bud,

John

Devon, is it done yet?

John,

Ha, my problem is my list grows to fast.

Steve,

I am in Canada this weekend but I hope to make a real concerted effort in the next week or so to get it done. I want to run it before years end.

Thankfully when I started this project I didn’t realize how ambitious it was. Otherwise I might not have tried it. But I am so glad I did. It will be very rewarding to see it run. It was a hoot to build and I am very happy for a first build.

OK getting closer all the time. Today I installed the RCS-Australia Omega ESC, Radio RX, on/off switch, and charging jack. I affixed the ESC board with double stick tape to the tender floor. I built a frame out of scrap Plexiglas to attach the On/Off switch, jack, and RX to. The idea of doing it the way I did (right or wrong) was to keep it all in a relatively small space in the tender and allow access from the top for the on/off switch and jack. The sound card should fit on the back wall of the tender in the same location keeping everything together. By accessing the switch and jack from the top I won’t need to remove the loco from the track or travel carrier to turn it on or off and charge it. That is also why I left the wood load removable; they are hidden but easy to get to.

now I need to hook up a plug of some sort to run the motor and the front light that the locomotive will plug into.

I still have the speaker and batteries to get in there. I plan to build and actual speaker enclosure and then put the batteries wherever they will fit. Some configuration of 14.8v and around 4000mAh

So some more work has been done. I made the wire harness for the loco and wired it to the ESC; this includes the motor leads and head lamp leads. A four pin plug was used. It is hard fastened to the tender front sill. The loco was wired also. I finally tested the motor and it works great at 12v.

I ran into a couple issues. One I need to change out the front head light LED with one that won’t need a resistor for ease. Also when I was getting ready to test the whole chassis I realized I made a big error. The linkage that opperates the valve gear is in the way of the side rods. So I will have to do some surgery before it can run. I have completed the draw bar attachment. I am finishing up the one hand rail that is left. Since I am replacing the LED I am redoing the head light attachment as well. By the end of the weekend I hope to have everything done except the battery and breaker. I am hoping it will be done in Jan. For the clubs drag and brag.

Little more progress the hand rails are complete. They are made from the metal rod of sprinkler flags. The stanchions are white metal castings of cribbage pegs and the finial is a Mayberry Street Miniatures doll house door knob that is drilled to receive the rod.

Looking good buddy. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I’d like a small 2-6-2 please.

Your on. Just as soon as I finish my bucket list. Which you keep adding to faster than I can build. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)
