Has anyone logged onto the internet in the past few days, with MSN as their home page, and noticed that all of the news stories are missing ? Basically, I get a blank page with a tiny MSN logo in the upper right corner and the Bing search box in the upper center of the page.
I get a huge amount of stuff. So you have an issue at your computer… (unless you have a custom home page gone wonky)
- log out of MSN if you are logged in
- do a forced refresh, if you don’t know how, then delete your browser cache (not cookies)
- Try a different browser, like IE
- update your browser
- disable your plugins
- update flash
That’s where I would start Dan.
Greg
I never log into MSN directly unless logging into Hotmail counts as logging into MSN.
How do I delete browser cache ?
What are plug-ins ?
So I can give you detailed instructions.
(yes a login to hotmail is a login to the microsoft behemoth)
But I think you need to start with #1 first… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)they are in order!
Also, what browser (and version) are you using?
Greg
I use Safari as my browser.
Ouch, I am not a Mac expert… but Safari is really a lousy browser compared to other options.
heres how:
NOTE WELL: if you clear cookies, all your saved login name and password stuff is cleared… you just want to clear the cache:

Now, I’d suggest trying another browser, try firefox: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=firefox-com
Greg
Thanks Greg. Before i do anything, I need to sleep on it. It’s almost 11:00 PM out here and my eyes need a rest. I’ll study your suggestions in the AM.
No problem, will check in during the day if I can help more.
Installing FireFox let’s you try it easily and if it works that answers some questions, if it does not work, no harm no foul.

Dan, maybe it’s a good thing ya don’t get the news. We use mostly the old peoples browser 'cause that’s where I have my name without any numbers or extra letters behind it. Their news works real good and I will say I never would have known about 9-11 if it hadn’t been for that outfit (we don’t watch morning TV). Tangentially speaking though, Greg, I would like to take a hammer to W 10 and their stupid Cortona or whatever her name is, who keeps saying things like, “Hi,” and “Don’t forget to buy eggs,” and crap like that. And don’t get me started on how these guys are all in cahoots so that if you buy like a light bulb, you get a dozen, “People also bought” and stuff. Argh! Leave me alone!
Thanks. Have a nice evening.
Oh Jeeze, there are times I have wanted to shoot my computer just because I cannot completely extract Cortana.
I have tips on my site to turn off most of the stuff, next attack is the cell phone… I’ll root the next one and throttle Google spying on me.
I like technology, but I don’t need my computer, phone, and checkout line at Home Depot talking to me, tracking my spending, etc.

I turned Cortona OFF in settings.
On my Win 10 machine with Google as my home page I get “Try Chrome” all the time.
On a real big tangent, lately I have been dabbling with Linux Mint on an ancient computer that I use for my hobby and am impressed with it.
It uses Firefox as a browser which is quite good.
I also use Libre Open Office instead of the MS office and it works with all my old MS stuff.
Bonus is that I get none of the MS Google rubbish and there is a good forum for asking stupid questions.
I gave up with Windows 10 on my desktop, far too many unwanted apps etc., but very happy using Linux Mint and Opera browser. I do have dual boot so W10 is there if needed. There is one Ham radio programme that W10 uses that I have not got with Linux, can be installed but I did not want to do it. My laptop (Sony VAIO) still is W10 only so I use that. But eventually that will go the Linux way. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
I made my own system and have no issues with W10.
Of course there are NO manufacturers apps as there was no manufacturer that customized the software. Also I only use pro versions of Windows.
And when going to do updates, read carefully about ‘extra’ software that will be loaded unless you search for decline. Too many virus programs conflict with each other.
OK, we gotta get back to Dan P (and by the way Grame, look in the windows task manager, I’ll bet you $100 you have a cortana service running)
Dan: Thinking more, please just go and install FireFox from firefox.com… easy, free, and then go to msn… that will tell us the most without any danger to you… FireFox is a well known and safe browser, so should be no worries…

Speaking of Home Depot - I’m still wondering how they got my email address and linked it to my debit card. Every time I buy something, a few days later I get an email “did such and such work for you as expected?”. Creepy.
Have you ever googled your name? Clearly HD has at the very least your name and city… that’s all I used for the following searches
http://www.buzzfile.com/business/Steve-Weidner-904-753-1719
https://www.intelius.com/people/Steve-Weidner/Sylvester-GA/06PEECB9MXN
and your email is part way down this page: https://www.beenverified.com/people/steven-weidner/ (look for your city)
and this is the FREE stuff, if you are home depot and pay for information, you get more.
welcome to the year 2000… Greg (yes this stuff was available 17 years ago)
I blocked all MSN, MSNBC , and all the associated BS.
My home page is a car forum I frequent.
As Mister ElMassian knows, there is no way in hades I would ever load the MS last operating system on anything.
In fact, just to prepare for any unpleasantness MS might like to throw at us, I have a tower connected via a KVM switch with Ubuntu…on which I am going to load a virtual machine OS soon.
I have enough Macrium Reflect images saved, plus discs, and even license keys, to keep using the LAST KNOW GOOD OS until they put me in a home…and even then, I’ll keep using it.
I figured out 10 years ago how to kill automatic updates…and found it works also on 7, 8 and 8.1, so at no time did MS even try to load the “free” ten on my machines.
No Siri, no Alexa, no Cortana (and MS is working feverishly to have their own audio assistant…soon) here at all.
Oh…and I don’t even use Outlook for e-mail. So the MSN splash pages aren’t even there.
Remember Outlook Express?
OK, I did not post the first “derailing” post, but I did keep responding. My bad.
Earth to Dan (OP), over: any progress on your problem?
Greg
15 years. Don’t know if that is when this all started or when the new software eliminated older posts. Fifteen years.
I have had folks e-mail me telling me of new “rules”. Finally found is at the very bottom of the forum listing.
Good place for it.
So, 15 years later, I find I don’t need this anymore.
So, since some options are not available, I am just going to remove all bookmarks (as I did with the old Sprocket Site) and do something else.
Will miss your wisdom Dave. TTFN
